For the entirety of his adult life, Lucas never owned anything beyond what he would be able to fit in his car. Even before he was stolen away to Arcadia, he had struggled with housing and employment stability. While he loved the city of Toronto, the cost of housing made it almost impossible to live where without a steady job and roommates. After he returned from Arcadia, he got into his car, and drove across the border to Detroit. He had better luck finding housing on the outskirts of the city, closer to other cities like Hamtramck.
When he came to Vegas, he only had a couple of suit cases with him. He ended up at the Sportsman Royal Manor The weekly to monthly motel was perfect for his needs. If he lost his job because his depression got the best of him, he wouldn't have to worry about getting evicted. The Manor did not do a credit check, they accepted payment in all forms, and the rooms were furnished. For his needs, a extended stay type hotel furnishing was perfect. The monthly rent covered all the utilities, he got free Wi-Fi, it was close to the hotel, and since he was up on the top floor he had his own balcony. That was his favorite part of the apartment. He spent many a spring and summer evening hanging out on the balcony, reading, sipping a beer, and enjoying his solitude. No one cared about being neighborly here.
Around the time he moved in, the rooms had been renovated under the new manager, Mrs. Garcia's, care. She was an older woman in her late 60s who was widowed. A couple of her adult children helped her with running the place. She was popular in the area because she worked with a lot of locals who lost their housing for various reasons. She had taken a liking to Lucas, she could tell he was a troubled soul with a gentle heart. The two of them had a dinner night where she would come over, check on him (especially if she hadn't seen him about the property all week), bring him some home made dinner, and she would regale him with her childhood stories from all over Mexico. She enjoyed Lucas' company because he was genuinely interested in her stories and he shared some of her superstitions, especially around ghosts.
Around mid-April, Lucas had brought home a new roommate in the form of a Goffin Cockatoo. Late at night, Lucas had received a phone call from Mildred's family. Mildred had passed the week prior and they were going through her estate. Her 20 year old bird, Luther, had been her dearest companion. Unfortunately, Luther did not like small children or other animals. The plan had been to take him to a rescue center. However, they thought they would ask Lucas first if he wanted to adopt Luther, since he spent so much time visiting Mildred. Lucas had not been intending on saying yes to the offer, but when he saw the poor little fella, how sad he was without Mildred, and how no one wanted him...Lucas couldn't say no. He was worried that Mrs. Garcia was going to say no too. However, because of her age and her accent, Luther took an immediate liking to her. The intelligent and affection loving bird won her over by showing her a few tricks, his out going personality, and he would start dancing whenever she sang to him in Spanish. Mrs. Garcia had helped Lucas set up Luther's birdcage in the living. The family had donated a few months worth of food, cleaning supplies, and toys to get Lucas started. Sometimes Mrs. Garcia would take Luther with her when she was going to be in her main office working, since he enjoyed playing with his enrichment toys while listening to her interact with clients.
Mrs. Garcia got on Lucas about returning to his Spanish lessons. While Spanish was far from German, it was a useful language to have, and Luther appeared to enjoy hearing another language besides English. She used to tutor Lucas when she came over to visit him but he lost momentum several months ago. Now that he had Luther who seemed to prefer foreign languages over English, it was time for him to get back on his lessons. Luther and Lucas formed a new evening routine. An hour or so before Lucas went to bed, he would load up his Duo Lingo app, and speak his lessons out loud to Luther. The Fairest would swap out whatever names were in the story, using their names instead. Typically, that was enough socialization to lull Luther to sleep and prevent any late night squawking for attention.
"Luther es muy bonito y inteligente!" Lucas looked up from his phone, glancing across the room at Luther.
The Winter Courtier did not look like he was expecting company in any capacity. He was relaxing on the couch, wearing a pair of athletic shorts, a sleeveless t-shirt, and he was finishing up the single beer he had to go along with his snack.
