Ivory was not blind to the coming holiday, though she was not profoundly religious in any sense, be it Abrahamaic or pagan, but for the Pale Dragon the holiday served another purpose. It was a time to give thanks to those who mattered. To gift something to those whom she adored. This year that meant honoring the family she had left. Thus, two gifts were prepared, though the expectation to wait until Christmas was not required.
For Evelyn, the package was delivered directly to her door, weighing just over 30 pounds. Atop the package was an envelope, addressed to Evelyn herself, and, within that, rested a neatly folded sheet of parchment paper bearing a message written in Ivory's unmistakable handwriting:
Your voice is like a verdant spring morning
Soothing promises flow from ruby lips
Calling for an imminent end to loss
That has weighed heavily upon my heart.
I beg your forgiveness for my delay
Let me now commit myself upon you
For your love is a welcome winter’s hearth
That provides the embrace for which I yearn.
Happy Holidays, Evie.
I love you.
- Your Darling
The poem was sappy and Ivory knew it, but she was no poet and perhaps it would mean more since she had penned it herself. The gift itself was an art deco piece, roughly 14 inches long. The sculpture itself was a bronze, art deco rendering of a flapper girl reclining in relaxation. It rested on a thin marble base. The find had delighted Ivory and, to her, it seemed a fitting gift for her love, as Evelyn understood the value of art. That and the manageable size gave the Avowed an abundance of options with where she could place it.
Anthony's gift was instead mailed, as the boy had elected to head to NYC for the holiday in the company of friends, renting an AirBNB. Ivory knew he would be there for Christmas and had managed to learn the address from Anthony himself. A simple price to pay when she agreed to gift him the money for the rental. His gift was smaller than Evelyn's but the meaning was nonetheless deep and very dear to Ivory's heart.
In a small black box rested a 1923 Elgin pocket watch. It had once been the property of Pendragon's grandfather, his real grandfather, who had been gifted it to his son when he came of age. Pendragon's father did the same. And now, with Anthony going out into the world, the time had come to gift him with the same pocket watch. Anthony was familiar with the pocket watch. It had once been featured prominently in Pendragon's office.
Ivory knew she could never tell Anthony Pendragon's real name from before his Durance or even his moniker among the Lost. To him, Pendragon would always be 'Arthur', just as Ivory would always be 'Abigail', but granting Anthony some piece of Pendragon's past - before the Change - seemed right.
Accompanying the gift was a small notecard embossed with one of Pendragon's favorite quotes:
"Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted."
- John Lennon
On the reverse was a simple handwritten note from Ivory herself, limited as it was by the space provided
I'm so proud to see who you are becoming
Love, Abigail
She had told Anthony he reminded her of his father and, the older he got, the more it seemed true. Her only regret? Anthony would not be spending Christmas with her, but maybe he would have the time come New Years before school began again.
