Clusters of the mundane population are beginning to act erratic in extreme mobs of heightened emotions. Initial investigations confirm that it isn't one of the Lost abusing the power of Bedlam. Epilogue
The first instances of the Keeper invasion didn't start to emerge until Mid-November. With the Herald's announcement during the Ashen Hunt, the Freehold had been on high alert as they paid attention to the Goblin Market's growing activity, while the Sun's Tongue passed on the prophecy that a Title would come from the Dream. Despite Uriel's call for the Lost to seek motley oaths to protect their Bastions, the denizens of Vegas were slow to forge intimate measures they were unused to, and the trickle of erratic behaviour went largely under the radar until it was a rampant psychic disease.
Too Bad, So Sad
Henley was first made aware of an incursion when his office assistant passed on a viral image that supposedly would curse him. The Nymph passed it on to his motleymate, Gavin Graves, who immediately dissected it as connected to the Goetia and soul theft, and the human reached out to his human connections to figure out the rules of the chain letter game. He apparently had ten days to figure out how to make himself suffer forever, or he would be dragged off to hell in a dream, but could extend his time by passing on the curse to others, which time was halved with each recipient. It was rumoured that delivering the curse saw positive rewards in one's life, but a few people were thought to have now gone missing as a result. Henley connected Gavin's research with symbols of the invading Keeper, prompting them to accept this was a problem the Freehold should indeed look into.
Gavin suggests since Its power would be spreading through the human collective unconscious, they could attempt to counter-meme. The office assistant (now Henley's Bargain against potential Huntsmen) volunteered to look into the chain of the mutually cursed, while Henley and Gavin proceeded to bend fate, hit the black market, and foot the bill for an original copy of the Lesser Key of Solomon. Victorious, they joined the Magistrate of Nightmares to review the construction of their binding ritual as novice wizards requiring some legitimate oversight.
Armed with a plan to reverse the ritual by having the cursed forgive one another, a nasty wrench was tossed into the plan as the full scope of the Keeper's devastation presented itself to Henley's assistant. After seeking who cursed him, Tony the human opened the door to a grisly scene of another university student that had presumably exploded from the inside for failure to overcome the spell. Not knowing what to do now that he couldn't engage the ritual (and witnessing a dead body for the first time in his life), Tony texted the Lost with an update. Henley attended to his Bargain and left with a cat added to his household, while Gavin scoped the situation and Victor cleaned up.
Henley worked on a video to distribute to humanity to counteract the curse, before having Victor and Gavin seek out a back alley doctor that could install cold iron dermal implants. They converged on asking the Knight Commander for assistance in disassembling an iron gate they had purchased, before the Elemental explained the nuances of what Cold Iron actually is in the modern era. With some reasoning, he was convinced to donate links in his chain weapon, as well as the agreement that this was a temporary solution to prevent blood toxicity with the mundane victims.
Victor then spun fate with the Mastermind's Gambit to create a cult, in which Henley posed himself as the charismatic director while Gavin enacted the role of the unseen beast approaching with the curse's final destination. This spurred those effected by the Keeper's designs to chain the ritual and temporarily shield themselves from their shared fate.
Effects on the Freehold
- "The Cult of the Iron Band" is now a presence that believes it is fighting demonic influence over the city. Henley's computer is eventually hacked as the cult funnels some company funds to their cause (whether they had supernatural help, or just extremely capable to locate him is currently unknown). Anthony Cartwright is a recognized 'member' as one of the higher ranking occultists who has the iron ring scarred into his hand. Many members of the university and other adults involved in the chain curse make up its membership. They are a neutral entity that currently do not pose a threat to Lostkind, though certain members connected to the Freehold can puppet them.
- Icarus vouches for Gavin Graves' talent, who is recognized as a novice ritualist that can create minor spells [OOC: using the same mechanics as the Token Merit]. He can now be included in conversations about structures that build the magic of the Freehold. Dame Scorpio's vassal's affiliation with her political rival is watched closely by other Fall members with interest. Namely Icarus' motleymate, Doormarch.
- Victor is recognized as alleviating a large burden on the Winter Court's Sun Banishers with his extra hand in covering up paranormal breaches and continues to forge a positive relationship with improving the neighbouring Court's jaded attitude towards the Freehold. His formation of the cult is currently unknown, but the High Seasons appear to be satisfied with the public results.
- Nate Henley is recognized among the Spring Court as a philanthropic influence that doesn't hesitate to improve the lives of the mortal population when negatively impacted by the Faerie world. His interactions with the Magistrate of Nightmares are gossiped about, causing Freeholders to watch the Knight for his Emerald affiliation and whether his Autumn Mantle maintains its power. The fact that Loki's execution tool was used to save lives is also celebrated as an ironic symbol of Spring's healing. Applications for consideration of Joyeux are sent to the throne.
