Denny's. In the nights since she felt her mantle completely fade, Denny's has become somewhat of a sanctuary for her. Most nights she can be found at the bar, drinking a Paloma and munching on chicken and waffles. Tonight is no different. She is wearing a pair of old, faded blue jeans and an Eeveelution tee-shirt. Her wig is shoulder length and ginger, but she hasn't bothered to overly secure it. Unlike other nights though, she does look more kempt, like she has some purpose. She isn't going to be alone tonight and she wanted to at least look like she is fully together. In reality, she's not as broken up about being shunted from her court as she is the new perception of her from her fellow freeholders. Maybe that part, being cast out, was meant to be. Or... Who knows? Maybe it'll lead to something better. She can only hope. She sits in her usual spot, looking around a little as she nibbles on a chicken tender that's been dipped in honey mustard. Usually when the two of them had plans to meet up, Lucas was excited to meet up with the Elemental. This time around it was a mixed bag. On the one hand, he was eager to check in with Dani and see how she was holding up. It had been a hell of a Summer for her. On the other hand, he was upset with her. He didn't want to say "I told you so" but damn was the temptation there.
Fortunately, he had managed to reel said temptation in for the time being and he was working on keeping it that way. A drink or two would help keep the edge off of his irritation. He was in luck as this particular Dennys made quite the Paloma.
For this particular outing he opted for a more low-key outfit to avoid drawing attention and make it easier for them to have privacy. He was wearing a backwards Blue Jay's baseball cap, a relaxed fit black hoodie, jeans, and a pair of sunglasses. Since it was Vegas no one bothered to look at him when he kept his sunglasses after stepping inside. It wasn't that uncommon for tourists to get trashed and keep their sunglasses on to help with hangovers.
He weaved past the lobby crowd while letting the hostess know he was meeting up with someone who was already inside. A few moments later and he successfully spotted Dani.
"Hey, how's it going?"
He waved to her on his way to the bar and then sat down next to her.

Dani sets down her drink when she spots Lucas and gives a wave, turning her body toward him as he sits down next to her, "Hey there, stranger." her voice is casual and there is a little smile on her face. She is happy to see him after all, even though things are... well, they've been tense since Summer. Though, she hopes that Lucas doesn't blame her too much.
"I'm doing as well as can be," You know, given everything that's happened. It's code for 'not great'. "But it is what it is. How are you doing? I've missed you." It wasn't something she was expecting to say, but it was true. The Elemental has contained herself from spreading out and being more social, making closer bonds with others. The few close friends she does have, she absolutely treasures.
She slides some of her plate over, offering to share her chicken tenders.

The temptation to huff and puff and blow the elemental down quickly vanished what the sincerity behind her words and her offering of the tendy.
With an internal sigh, he set aside his negative emotions and greeted the other Lost with a smile. He thanked her for the chicken tender as he sat down and then helped himself to the offered food. "I've missed you too. It's been a heck of a summer. "
It was strange being around his friend and sending the negative social stigma that the season had slapped on them. "I've been doing okay, all things considered. How have you been? Given...everything that's happened recently. "

"Yeah, you can say that again," a slight huff. There is a bitterness there, even though she'd been feeling for sometime that she didn't fit in with her own court. "Honestly, it felt like the Summer was never going to end."
But that's beside the point. How has she been doing? Really been doing? "It's... it's not great. I'm not really-" she sighs, staring down at her drink and stirring it slightly with the little straw. "It feels like a giant punch to the gut, like, with everything I've done. I get it. I get that what I did, I didn't put heart behind it, there was no Fire behind it, but I didn't realize that I was so un-Summer that I'd get kicked out of the org basically, you know?"
She lets out a slight puff and normally there might be a slight flare to her smoky mantle, but instead, there is nothing. Nothing.
"And honestly, I have no idea what I'm going to do. I-" another pause as she finally looks up from her drink. It's probably the first time she's really noticed the sunglasses on him inside. Should she ask?
"I'm sorry I-" how to even phrase 'ditched you to go beat up my partner', although, beat up is relative. Really, she just succeeded in pushing them out of the ring. And they still needed to talk about it. Really talk about it. "I'm sorry I ditched you there. It just felt like something I had to do and I know that's a shit excuse." She doesn't even mean it as an excuse, it is just something that is what it is.

Lucas listened to Dani, frowning to himself as he noticed the lack of flames coming off of her. This was the first time he had ever been around someone who had their mantle stripped from them and it was unsettling to say the last. Their mantles were threads that wove them into the same community and now Dani stood out like a plucked thread.
"I appreciate the apology. The thing is, Dani, it's not just that you ditched me...it's that you ignored my existence all together all because Riley was present and needed to do some Big Dramatic Gesture. Those sort of things sound great on paper but they rarely workout in reality. "
He let out a sigh. His voice was still soft and there wasn't any real edge to it. Dani was beaten down enough as it was. He wasn't going to go to town on her and shove her even further into her despair.
"What you need to do--and Riley needs to do the same--is show that you care about the community. Anyone who has gone rogue recently and put their own desires above the well being of the community has crashed and burned. That's not to say you gotta live and breathe the freehold culture 24/7, but you gotta show that being here means something to you."
He dropped his voice so that only Dani would be able to hear him.
"We can lie to our courts. We can lie to our loved ones. We can lie to ourselves. We can't lie to the Wyrd. The Wyrd knows what's in our hearts and it will act accordingly. It doesn't use human reasoning to guide it's actions. It is an entropic, magical force, that is guided by things like oaths and rites. "

"That's valid. I'm sorry I did that. I knew Riley wouldn't get it so I've been putting it off. It felt like every time was the wrong time. Well, now I guess they get it. Hopefully. At least partially."
Dani could almost scoff then. Show that she cares about the community? Show that the person who got her team back from the desert, the person who went out on a limb and put herself into severe danger to help another member of the Freehold who was being hunted, the person who gave one of the most important pieces of herself to help get the freehold some of the most important information it is gotten in God knows how long, show that she cares about the Freehold? What kind of load of crap is that?
But then Linden... Was that a sign? Plus all the other things that came from that event. The other deaths. Shit got fucked.
"I guess fighting isn't enough." Wasn't that what she always said? How else can she help the freehold then? How else can she prove that she wants to be here? "I have no idea what I'm gonna do about it, honestly." She lowers her voice more, "I get why the season has punished me. I really do. My heart hasn't been in it for months. Maybe it's even a good thing, a way of pushing me to figure out what the hell I am, you know? Is that the wrong attitude to have?"
She does think hard on his words about the Wyrd, the way it knows the deeper you. The parts beyond the lies we tell ourselves. Rites and oaths and the other promises we make without glamour... "I really fucked up so didn't I?" She purses her lips briefly, "I didn't even want to fight in the first place. That's the thing about summer, fighting doesn't always help. Things should be settled with talks, with understanding. Fuck, deals when you need to. Not that Riley could. All I did was show I could beat my partner in a duel and I hate that."

[CW: Non-descript reference to a historic suicide attempt]
Lucas continued to listen without interrupting the Elemental, recognizing that they needed the space to speak. There was a certain amount of power in speaking one's thoughts out loud. Hell, their Arcadian magic was often fueled by the words they spoke. The oaths they made were empowered by the words of truth they spoke. While they were not invoking any kind of magic at the moment, there were so many words that needed to be said to begin healing.
There were words Lucas needed to speak out loud but he wasn't ready to say them yet. Winning the egg had yielded more questions than it had answers. When he was taken to the Underworld with Necropolis, he had always assumed that he had survived his suicide attempt because of whatever magic Necropolis used. Looking back, it was a silly thought now considering how powerful Gentry were. Back then he didn't realize the full scope of a Gentry's powers. Without memories of his time in Arcadia, his mind did it's best to create an abstract version of what had likely happened to him. Then he broke through the barriers of life and death when he used his kith's blessing on Golden Boy and he felt the full power of what a Gentry or a Gentry like being was capable of. Even though he had experienced it his mind wasn't sure how to process the event. How did someone properly process reality unfolding all around them? Then when he held the egg and discovered that there was a ritual that could bring the dead back and well...
It made him realize he had likely died and Necropolis had brought him back. Or maybe he wasn't even brought back to life per say. Maybe he had died and remained dead in the Underworld, which was why he was a Gravewight. He could still technically be dead at this very moment and he was being held together by whatever Necromatic energy Necropolis had infused in him. If that was true then what happened when he died once more?
Did Nohoilpi show Bonnie what horrors awaited her in death before she died?
There was someone who had the answers to his questions; Monarch Nohoilpi.
At this point, Lucas was completely confident that the Winter Monarch was aware of his various activities. It felt like a test at this point. Winter was largely hands off. Unless Lucas did something disruptive, it was unlikely he was going to be interrupted. If he did something disruptive...considering he was a Gravewight, there was a good chance that Roger and Nohoilpi would drag him into Twilight to talk rather than sending someone like Fawkes to knock on his door.
Once he acknowledged to Nohoilpi that he knew--once those words were spoken out loud and he gave power to them--everything would change.
He wasn't ready to set that time off just yet. He wanted to focus on the here and now and what was in front of him. God, he wished there was more time. Not only did the powers of Arcadia allow him to commune with the dead, but by tapping into Crown magic, he could call upon the Wyrd to alter fate in a positive way. He hadn't mastered the magic to do that yet and he wasn't sure there was enough time to intervene in the ways he wanted.
What he did have time to do was stand up and move his seat so that they were right next to each other. That allowed him to lean over and wrap an arm around her shoulder. He pulled her close to him while he used his freehand to remove his sunglasses. There wasn't anything unusual about his eyes that would suggest he was trying to hide actually being hung over or high. His eyes were as bright and soulful as ever.
"Whatever it is that happens, I won't leave you, Dani. I promise. We'll figure this out together. You have to promise not to leave me either."
There was an undeniable sadness in his eyes as he thought about what would happen to Dani if she decided to leave the freehold. He didn't try to use his fog to shield his emotions, instead he allowed her to get a full sense of the sorrow that filled him so that she could hopefully see in turn that he genuinely cared for her well being. After a couple of moments had passed he shifted over to an encouraging look.
"I have an idea on what might help but it will require a leap of faith on your part."

Danica watches Lucas carefully and notes the genuine and encouraging look in his eyes. His words strike a chord with her and she swallows, feeling both a sense of awkwardness and happiness. This is what it's like to have a best friend.
"I promise I won't leave you; you're my best friend. No matter what, we'll make things work. And I'd seal that if ever you wanted proof of how serious I am."
She does her best to hold back the tears that are threatening to spill from her eyes. "But then, I want that anyway. I think we should be a motley. Whether you want that now or later or not at all, I want you to know that that's how I feel."
"What's your idea?" Her eyebrows scrunch a little bit and she cocks her head to the side.
What kind of solution could he have that would help her get back in the good graces of the Freehold? She figured she would need to build up some kind of support, some kind of goodwill to help protect her. Maybe he has an idea of how to start that process. Or maybe it's something else entirely. Leap of faith?

Those soulful blue eyes of his were sparkling when she called him her best friend. Few things resonated in the hearts of a Fairest quite like someone affirming that the two of them had a special connection of some kind. It didn't have to be remotely romantic to be meaningful. What countered was that it was a unique, special bond that was shared between the two of them.
"I want the same thing, Dani. My plan is ambitious but if we pull it off, it could turn into something great."
Lucas continued to lean in towards Dani. What he wanted to share with them was hard to codify. With how loud it was all around them, it would be difficult for others to overhear or for most people to even be able to have a conversation without yelling. However, because of their unique connection to reality and being able to perceive it more keenly than humans, he could speak in a whisper to Dani at this range and she should be able to hear him.
"What if we started off as a work motley with the goal being to get you back into the good graces of the Freehold? We could seal our motley pledge to each other by doing another handfasting rite. The Freehold wants you to honor more of our customs and rites, yeah? A motley is one of them. By doing a handfasting ceremony again we maybe able to invoke the Wyrd and get that extra blessing that we were aiming for back when we did it during the Blood sports competition."
Lucas paused for a moment to let Dani process what he was sharing with her before continuing.
"One of the contracts I have allows me to visit people's dreams and get a glimpse of who they are at their core being. If you give me permission during the oath pledge to visit your dreams for the duration of our mission, then I can work with you on rebuilding your bastion. I imagine it's pretty beat down at this point. We could literally help build you back up from the inside and process all of the different hurt and pain you've been through over these past few months."
One of the advantages of being a Lost was they could use props and other things within a dream to help recover from the various traumas involved with life as a Lost. He studied Dani's face to see what her reaction was to his proposal.

Ambitious plan? She listens intently trying to keep her mind open to what Lucas is bringing to the table.
His proposal is perfect. A work motley, a handfasting - all things that will show the Freehold that she wants to honor their rites. Will these kinds of things really put her back in the good graces though? Will it be enough? She could only hope. She looks over Lucas then, continuing to process his words.
He breaks the silence between them once more with another bomb. Going into her dreams? It's something that's always scared her. She's always been afraid of what someone might stumble upon in there. Some of her nightmares are harsh, fiery hellscapes. Some are just too sweet for eyes. Her hopes live there too when she's truly lucid and not just letting them play out. Is this something she wants? Does she trust him enough?
Of course she does. That's why she wants to take him with her. She opens her mouth and then closes it, thinking hard on it. "I want that. That could work. Both of them I-" She smiles then in a way that makes her a little teary, "Yes. Let's do a handfasting, write a solid oath with purpose. I'll admit, I'm a little scared of having someone prodding my brain, but I can get over it." She hopes.
"There's another thing. Something else I think might help. I was talking to Mitch and, well, I want to go into the hedge. There are pieces of ourselves somewhere in the hedge and finding those pieces rebuilds our souls. I want to do it, find one, but I can't go alone. Will you come with me?" Her orange eyes are filled with a hope. She can't imagine he'd say no, but it doesn't really reduce the anxiety of asking.

As he realized their plan had a chance of working, he began to feel a dangerous yet sorely needed emotion in Vegas; hope. He was almost afraid to allow himself to feel it because if it didn't work out then it would likely set off his depression. His depression was always hovering around in the back of his mind, whispering words of self-doubt whenever he let his guard down. If they gave it their all and things got worse...the voice would go from a whisper to a thunderous boom.
But he needed this as much as Dani needed it. For all of the success he had had recently, his personal relationships were still in the loss column. Sure, he was connecting well with Eurydice but their developing relationship hadn't been truly tested yet. He wasn't even sure what the two of them were to each other. They were obviously attracted to each other and there was a genuine emotional connecting building between them. For all the good progress they had made, there were still other factors that could easily wreck all of that...such as Mitch.
He pushed those thoughts away and returned his attention to the here and now. A work motley was the safest bet for the two of them. Dani couldn't withstand an emotional blow any more than he could. If they were successful in this endeavor then they could form a proper motely and let that hope bloom between the two of them. If they failed, then at least there wouldn't be as many pieces to pick up.
"We will do it one step at a time to make sure that it's something you're comfortable with. See if we can connect with anyone who can give us guidance on things to avoid and not make it worse. Maybe Cinderella. She's an expert in all things occult. I helped out one of her motley mates so I think she'll be more willing to work with us on this project. Plus, we could even ask her to oversee the handfasting since she did it last time. She has a softer spot for Lost who are struggling with human emotions versus some of the other occult experts who get stuck in Wyrd vision."
He closed his eyes over as they spoke, finding comfort in her warmth. Their two body temperatures complimented each other and created a pleasant in between temperature whenever they touched.
"Yeah, of course. I'll help. I can summon my Hob again. The one who helped me win the competition. Maybe Gavin will want to come along with us, if you feel comfortable with that. During the competition, he breezed through there as easily as a Hob on top of wrecking that troll."
With his free hand he reached into his pocket and pulled out his cellphone. Then he held it up in the air, having it point at them as he opened up his eyes.
"But first, in true millennial fashion, we gotta take a selfie to celebrate the occasion."
