"It might not play to the image you've got in your mind of what we do here, but stopping crime on a systemic level isn't about heroes kicking in doors with their big boots and shooting bad guys. You were Spring Courtiers; think about what that looked like. People want things, sure. But most people, they don't just go from nice folks to sacrificing poor people. Think about it. This world is hard, and people suffer a lot. Needs that aren't met. Support that isn't provided. Things that are said that get ignored. Even jokes that, if you were to take them seriously, might give you a hint of what people really are going through... any of that sound familiar?"
She left a pause, sweeping her gaze through the crowd to let it percolate.
"So often, these hints are there and people just don't pay attention. Lots of people cry out for help in their own ways, but some go unheard. And then we wonder why people make dangerous or harmful decisions."
The Polychromatic gestured to the lot of them, the young trainees that had come forward from Spring.
"You have to mind your neighbors, my friends. Not as an asshole digging into their business, or an overzealous cop looking to make an arrest. It starts by being a friend, someone who cares, someone who listens and empathizes and validates their needs. Turns out those skills aren't just for Spring. They're what people who care do."
She smiled broadly, her colors gold and red with conviction.
"There's a mental health crisis out there, but we can help by being good peers. One of the greatest things you can do for the Freehold is be there for people, hear their needs, give them options to help themselves, and let Sir Solomon or I know if there are people falling through the cracks. If we can't help, we may well know people who can. Each of you are bound for different sorts of careers here in Summer, but every one of you can make a difference for our people if we listen and report when you hear something that makes you concerned. If something seems wrong, the right thing to do is let us know. Don't ignore your instincts. Trust yourself, and don't stay silent. You're here because you care, and people who care act."
Kai's hands found her hips, and she nodded once, a pinnacle of certainty.
"That's the Summer way."
