Firebringer throws on a pair of distressed black jeans and an Alesana band-tee, getting herself in a nice neutral area for hanging out at a bar. It takes her a bit to decide which wig she is going with. She has so many now. Helps that she works with a bunch of drag queens. She goes for a natural looking, medium brown wig with curly hair that is somewhat frizzy. It makes her feel like she's in her natural head of hair with the damage done to it. Finally, she throws on a pair of chucks and makes her way up to the bar that Kai Rose indicated. Good thing you're hanging with her now, unlike the shoulds you had with Linden. The thought is like a punch to the gut and she has to shove away the usual thoughts about to cloud her mind. Nope. Not today. Just... just exist today. She steps inside and looks around for Kai, perhaps a little timid of the environment. Going to bars and places that produce particular noises start to grind into her brain and leave her feeling ill. An ease back into it should help, right? A nice afternoon with mimosas should lift some spirits. It'll be nice to hang with Kai too.

Kai showed up reasonably quickly, black shorts and a white tank top with a cute picture of Sailor Venus pumping iron on the front of it. VENUS LIFTING TEAM. Adorable. She gave Firebringer a smile and a hello, then gave her phone number for the reservation so they could get seated. Initial offerings of menus and water got started, and she immediately put in an order for a grapefruit mimosa. She had specifically requested a quiet section, and while Vegas was never absolutely dead, weekdays in the early afternoon were not a super busy time at bars.
"You ever think that maybe it would be fun to retire and just do this all the time?"
There was a bit of a grin and a light-hearted tone in there, something nice to get started.

Fire gets settled and orders herself a blackberry mimosa. Kai's question brings a faint smile to her face and she lets out a small chuckle.
"That would be nice, wouldn't it?"
She does try to imagine what that would be like. Things not blowing up, not having people's lives entirely in your hands. It would be nice, but she'd never be content just sitting around. She's not made to sit back. Her orange eyes seem tired though as she sits there considering it.
The Ifrit lets out a slow breath before looking over Kai, "If you couldn't fight anymore, what would you be doing?"
It's a question she keeps asking herself. Really, she doesn't entirely know. The idea feels foreign, but she should think about it, right? If she couldn't fight anymore what would she do? She keeps trying to find an alternate self, try to form recognition of something about her that isn't about what she believes she was made to do, whether God made or Fae made. Sometimes it feels as though she was put on the planet to fight. It's what she's always done. But now she's scared, she's... Sometimes she's just still there. It's too fresh. So fresh, so real in vision that when her dreams bring her back there, she forgets that her dreams can be whatever she wants them to be.

"Raise support for the world we're trying to build as a lobbyist." She shrugged, the answer coming to her mind easily. Solomon hadn't gotten to where he was lately alone. She'd helped rebuild his image and support his vision, smoothing the serrated edges into something that kids used to drinking mimosas could get behind. She lowered her voice. "Honestly, I think I get more done for our club with my words than my bow these days. But you know more about doing good with words than me -- how was your speaking gig? Did that go well?"
The Wyrd's tendrils connecting their minds fed her extremely concerning information that she filed away for a report. Bastille needed to know he had an operator who was in the tank, lest he send her on another mission.

Firebringer nods, though to a degree, she isn't surprised. The last couple of times she's been with Kai, she's mentioned that drive for a better society, to create a utopia. At least, that's what she remembers anyway. Her brain is still a little fuzzy from the night before. The nightmares had been particularly bad and she ended up drinking a little to bring sleep.
"It did. Probably didn't change much, but gave food for thought. God... That feels like forever ago-" It was before everything went to complete shit. Well, more so in the middle. She has to concentrate to even consider how that went, which is disappointing, because it should be bigger in her mind and it just isn't. Accomplishments feel like nothing. "Sorry, brains a little foggy. Didn't sleep too well last night." She tucks a strand of the wig behind her ear and sighs a little bit, fiddling with another strand.
"I want to do more." She swallows and there is a hint of a but in there that is unspoken and it is obvious that she knows she isn't ready yet. She's barely handling people as it is. "I know I shouldn't overdo it though. I'll get there." She doesn't know when she'll be ready and that scares her, because it feels like this state might never end. This might be a new normal. She doesn't know if she can handle this kind of 'normal', it feels wrong. Perpetually wrong.
This is why we have people who care, right? Remind us it's okay? Except it does nothing. It fixes nothing. But then, we'd be worse off without them, tangible help or not.

Fuck. Whatever Firebringer had gone through had broken her badly, and while she wasn't a psychologist, there was enough information on the table to start parsing out what about the Elemental's condition was supernatural versus mundane. It felt like a complex case, the kind of thing that Dr. Wakefield would be needed for, even as Kai realized that she could do away with the magical piece through the repeated application of magic...
"Take your time, Dani. No rush. I figure I ought to ask, do you need anything, or just to hang out and shoot the shit?"
She didn't want to assume.

Fire looks at Kai and there is a tiredness to her orange eyes, a dimness that just says she can't. She can't go into things anymore. People have worn her out asking question after question.
"I just need to hang. Do something. I feel like I barely see the sun anymore," Hello insomnia, my old friend. She's been singing that to herself a lot lately. It never seems to end. "Maybe sometime we could do some training. I can't remember the last time I worked out though, so I'd be hella rusty," she lets out a small, weak chuckle.
"Could also go for shooting some philosophy, but that goes down a whole other avenue." Especially given how much she has been questioning what her true motivations are, what she wants out of life, how she wants to fight the Fae even. It's kind of scary.

Firebringer has one perspective, but Kai determines this is not an issue related to the Elemental's connection to reality... Firebringer is feeling utterly defeated—despondent due to stacked traumatic experience without proper psychiatric support, or even peer support in this circumstance. Kai is unaware if Riley is emotionally available for the Elemental's continued exposure to death and destruction. From what was witnessed in the Hedge, having her peers fall around her to constant violence would be triggering the connection to her Durance, and have the mundane impact of developing PTSD. For an Elemental, her inability to control her environment would be spinning her up, and the void of emotion is understandable with her fatigue.
She would be looking for confirmation around her that she is powerless and having no control, as the feedback from that familiarity would allow her to anticipate her surroundings. Kai wasn't a doctor, but she knew basic concepts like the cycle of abuse and victims of extreme environments being vulnerable to falling back into those dynamics.

Well, fuck. It was complex, a combination of post-traumatic stress disorder and exhaustion and magical fuckery. With the mind automatically searching for confirmation of the trauma reflexively, Kai realized that Firebringer was so far beyond her ability to cure. The magical piece, sure: throw contracts at a broken person long enough and you'd snap them out of that. But the overall picture?
Someone like Wakefield was going to have to solve that. And unless Firebringer decided to go herself, that was going to be a nightmare. Making her go was going to just make it worse, an Elemental being forced off the train and having supernatural and mundane feedback that drove her deeper into the hole. She thought a moment back to how she'd seen Carr handle Fawkes.
"Hell yeah. Sounds good to me. Which would you prefer? We could even do both, if you want."

"Well, let's start with the mimosas first," she says, looking over as they finally arrive and for a moment she looks contented with the distraction. She settles the curvy glass around her fingers before taking the straw and bringing it to her lips for a small sip. It's light and zingy, the opposite of how she feels and to a degree, it is refreshing.
"You know, I hadn't asked yet. How have you been doing? Have you gotten up to anything lately?" Something to take the conversation off of herself for a little bit, even if it is fleeting. Plus, Kai just seems so level. She wonders how the Polychromatic does it. How does she manage to relax after such traumatic situations? Was she used to them or did they just not hit her the same way?
She'd like to think it isn't weakness on her own part, but maybe it is. Another thing she'll need to consider talking to Mitch about.

"Good. I actually took a page out of your book." She gestured to the Elemental with her mimosa, the grapefruit juice swishing in the near-full glass precariously. "Teaching. I'm definitely not a natural, but... I've been instructing the new kids who joined our department recently in how they can help out in town with more than their fists." The glass found her lips and she took a long sip. "Their old department tended toward more social skills, caring about what people wanted and helping them chase their dreams. Hope, you know? But hope isn't all on them. We can do it, too. And the attributes that made them good at their old jobs are attributes that help us fight what's coming. So much of that war is fought up here." She tapped her temple once, twice.
"Other than that, I've been working. Apollo Athletics. It's going well. Solomon even helped train the horses. Summer's here, and that means tourist season. It's busier than hell. Gotta do some hiring."

"There has been an influx, hasn't there?" Bunch of Springs joined Summer, right? It felt like everyone was finding their place in Summer, but why can't she? It's frustrating. Infuriating even.
"I'm glad it is all working out for you though, even though it's been super busy." She wishes she could be super busy. Wished she had the energy for it. It's like being in a state of limbo where you want to go out, but you are bed ridden and you may never get up. And at the same time, maybe you don't want to.
Her mind keeps nagging at her then, ask about something that has been bothering her. And given how strong Kai has grown lately, it seems pertinent to ask, "Kai, how do you experience your anger?"
Maybe it was too personal a question, but lately, she just wanted to know how others felt their connections. Maybe she's just not looking in the right place. Or maybe it is because she is depressed and things will make sense when she gets better. She doesn't know. Does it matter though? Why not seek to know now?

She lowered her voice so as to not be overheard by the mundane.
"Yes. Some people's plain fuckin' hubris leading to the deaths of many good people have pissed everyone off, and the mimosa-drinkers are coming off the patio to help heal their Freehold through decisive action. Some will be soldiers. Others will help with mental health. All will help us to face the one who lurks in our dreams, in their own way."
The second question earned a long sip of the mimosa, and she stared off into the void a second, thinking about it as her skin turned from gold to blood red.
"How? Heavy topic, but..."
Pause.
"Distrust. I experience it as distrust. I don't think people are fundamentally good. They'll do good things sometimes, sure, but I think they're inclined to do whatever they can with power to get their own petty wants. There are some who prove to me that they're better than most. Ivory, for example, has been nothing short of a rock in my life even when she makes mistakes, and she has earned my promises by keeping her own. But my distrust comes from reality. Apollo and all the others that died during the Crisis died because of hubris. Hartman's sins are writ on public record. And I'm sorry to say it given your relationship, but Sorsa wears theirs in the back of our minds, where we know we can't trust them even if we don't know the exact details of why." She leaned forward a little, her teeth showing. "And with Linden's and Agrippa's deaths, I don't even need to get into Fall's sins. Whatever happened, I don't think y'all had a hope in hell, and that is squarely on Bonnie Hill."
She pointed a finger at her own temple.
"I'm fuckin' tired of burying friends because of other people's curiosity, or their whims, or their hubris. We live in a paradise for our kind, and it's never enough. Someone always has to eat the fuckin' apple, and someone else always dies for it. And so I don't trust. I don't trust people to be altruistic, I don't trust them to be smart, and I don't trust them to be good or safe without incentive."

Watching Kai change colors was both fascinating and terrifying. That blood red said before before she spoke gave a kind of mood lighting for what was to come. And the way the Polychromatic speaks is so intense that it is impossible to focus on anything aside from her words. She knows herself so well that she can put these thoughts into words. Lack of trust in people. People aren't fundamentally good. The bit about Riley stings a little, if only because she knows now what happened.
Something about the way Kai talks about Fall and Bonnie though does put a thought into her head: It wasn't just her fault, but I'm pissed off enough with her that it feels like it should be. She should be the one to blame. And yet all I do is blame myself... It was strange, and perhaps it was just being around Kai, but she felt more and more like these are things she needs to fix. She wants to fix them, but how and finding the energy to is the problem. Something to discuss with Mitch?
"Your logic there is more than sound." She can't help but remark. But do I believe it to be true? No. She believes people are fundamentally good, are always inclined toward good, even though they so often get tempted and give in to poor desires. It's a reason she could see why Spring is both good and bad for the Freehold. They press upon people to follow their dreams, but they can also steer the course of them. It seems like that could be evil. In a sense, it depends on the user. Archie was using something for private whims, right? But then there is a way to steer desires for the better, away from poor temptations and toward what their actual dreams are. Like, steering drug addicts from their vice and toward their more base-line dreams. Right?
"Thank you for sharing. It's more than insightful," It helps her try to view it all in a different light. "I don't know that I can believe that people aren't fundamentally good. They hesitate, they question their own evils and sins, whether they understand the hypocrisy of some of their own beliefs or not. It doesn't make anything you've said any less true though when you think about it."
But incentive and the way Kai has expressed that word makes her wonder the extent to which Kai believes in incentive.
What is mine? Maybe some of it is self-loathing, but there has to be more to it.
If she had to be honest with herself, perhaps it is the naiveté of people. Because people are fundamentally good, it is easy for so many of them to be taken advantage of or to find themselves in situations where if they'd only considered the damage it could cause themselves... maybe that's why she dislikes herself so much, because it is exactly what she does and what she did. She may have been a street rat, a fighter, but it doesn't change her base actions. Self-defense is how she fights now, even if it wasn't who she had to be back then. She always gives chances, over and over, she stays when she shouldn't, she always gives people the benefit of the doubt. Even with Riley, she's given them patience even though there is that screaming distrust in the back of her mind.

Kai let the reply come, her supernaturally-tuned senses pulling in and processing Firebringer's emotional cues about how the Ifrit was taking her message.
"You don't have to believe it, my friend. In fact, I'm glad you don't."
She sipped water. The mimosa was low. She kept her voice low, too. The colors slowly shifted back towards a happy gold.
"You asked me how I experienced it. What that feels like. What I do with that feeling, though, that's different... like you, I want to believe that people are inherently good, even if I don't currently. I just think we need measures and supports in place to help them get there. The speech I gave the junior ranks was basically, let's not forget the good parts about the Court they just left. The things it taught them about supporting people and giving them hope, those things are valuable and important, and it is important to really listen to people and ask for help if they see that someone is struggling. Spring concepts, but... people concepts, too. And if we're to be the best versions of ourselves, we have to remember that we're people."
She gestured to Firebringer with the water glass.
"Same question to you. How do you experience it? And what do you do with that feeling?"
