Street lights flickered on as the conversation turned to where they knew it had been headed all along. Settled around Linden's sparse apartment, the motley had lapsed once more into heavy silence when Linden opened their mouth, closed it, and then committed. "I feel like I've got a soft spot in my chest, like an old fruit. Just... heartsick. I wish you'd been up front about what you wanted Agrippa to do, and the rest... isn't how I would have done it." Seated on the floor, legs bent and their back to the foot of their bed, their mouth twisted with the knowledge that that went without saying, and didn't mean much. Punching the answer out of someone wasn't exactly higher ground to speak from. "I hate the cut throat business shit. I know that's your world but fuck, dude." They shook their head, at a loss for what exactly they wanted to say. "But, we're here. What are we going to do about it? I'm... what I'm saying is, I can weather it. This. But something has to change." @archie Riley Sorsa

He had been pacing. Fidgeting, head canting to the side periodically. Built up, boiling over.
“I get it.”
His voice was short.
“But really I shouldn’t have let this fucking Snake swindle me. Can’t write, can’t talk, and can’t fucking deal.”
His voice had vitriol in it.
“In my world? We handle it like people, not animals”
Venom was spat as he finally found a seat on the edge of the bed, sighing deeply and placing his face in his hands.
“It’s a story as old as time, take - take - take, then send the goons. I should have expected nothing less.”
He growled that last portion.
“Now it just has be fucking dealt with. News can’t be taken back. I’ve made arrangements with Chugunkin. Said he would help. But everything I have ever done for this community has been thrown away because of this one God damned Snake. And it isn’t like there isn’t more than one. We’re at the mercy of public opinion.”
It was a rant, he glanced for a moment as his motley members.
“Roll over and pull back. It doesn't matter what the truth is. Someone put out a story sooner and louder. It's a scar now. Giving up is probably the best. The Snake set fanatic thugs on us, and what? Their knives are long, and their sight, short.”
He resisted the urge to spit.

Riley was of two minds. Finding themself, it seemed between Linden and Archie.
The Moth stood crossed arms in thought, digesting the Archies side of the story and Linden's reaction. For Riley, it was the part about Agrippa that bothered them the most; they considered the Unicorn a friend. And How Archie handled that. Reminded them of their concerns first signing up with him. If they had not got the part, or the scandal at the troupe been worse, would he have done the same to Riley? It was a nagging doubt that the Darkling squashed under the heel of their resolve. That didn't matter now.
The other stuff, not that Riley would say it, didn't bother them. Choices were made to achieve goals. We use the tools given to us; we adapt, change, the metamorphosis was needed to survive. And who was Loki to Judge morality? The man was part of the cartels, the violence, the methods, the tools. Riley was certain Loki was far deeper in blood than Archie or themself.
The Moth pulled back from their thoughts for a moment. Archie was seething with anger; Riley could taste it in the air.
"As much as I hate allowin' them to kick us and get away with it. We don't have the same resources, and public opinion is against us. So lick our wounds but don't forget I say."
What was that old saying? Vengeance was a dish best-served cold?

"Just putting up and keeping our heads down isn't actually changing anything," Linden pointed out after a moment. "I mean about how we do things." They were trying to keep their own anger from sparking off of Archie's, pressing themself slowly back so the metal frame of the bed dug into their back.
But it wasn't working. "It does matter what the truth is, and the truth is I'm pissed that you put me in this position." The words left their mouth in a surge, the body echoing the force of it as they leaned forward to prop their forearms on their knees. "It's not about me! I know! It's about you and Loki and everyone else involved and guess what, I'm pissed at all of you. I don't get it. I don't get valuing an investment over one of us- what the fuck is money?"
"Why didn't you just walk away?"

“Because you don’t walk away! You owe it to the community for what they have done for you and even if it isn’t the most fun part you make sure everyone ends up better than where they were before. That is how we operate!”
That ‘we’ was very exclusive, as he compared the Lost community to another of his personal communities.
“And just as much I am not going to be stolen from, if I am known to give with no consequences all I’ll have is the beggar's hand stretched out in front me, with the saddest story they can tell.”
Clearly agitated, he stood up, pacing in front of their friend.
“And you shouldn’t be involved, this is my problem, my fault, and my retaliation. Next time do nothing, and I will handle it. If you are so pissed off with me than just fucking swing”

Riley felt the air seem to boil between Linden and Archie. Linden was always the cool one, taking everything in stride. Archie and Riley usually argued in these situations, leaving the moth to feel agitated and uncertain of their place.
Consequences. Archie was trying to enforce consequences; they could see how Archie saw it and how it looked to others. The Moth opened their mouth but stopped as Archie offered for Linden to swing.
A Cold chill ran up their spine and their large dark eyes darted to Linden.

There wasn't the time between the end of his words and when their fist struck his diaphragm for Linden to do anything except feel. The pure anger at his words, how little he understood the person he was speaking to. If everything was wound-for-wound retaliation, this was theirs. It was as pure an expression of feeling as any. Their knuckles ripped as metal passed beyond the skin's ability to hold it in and the Ogre let out a low, feral growl at the pain.
They caught the Fairest as he folded, uninjured hand grasping him by the shoulder tight enough to bruise. For a moment Linden simply looked down at him, then lowered their face toward his. A feeling began to simmer in the room, like acid creeping up to burn the bottom of their throats. "I made a promise to you, I gave my word. I am involved. You don't get to decide when, and if you," they hoisted him, barely resisting the urge to shake him, "Don't respect me enough to listen when I check you, what are we even doing here."
Eyes hard, they guided Archie back to a chair and dropped him into it. Riley was all but ignored, all of their attention and wrath focused on the Chatelaine. Linden crouched in front of him, the gesture of making themself smaller doing nothing to diminish the intensity of their voice. "I'm with you, Archie, I'm on your side. You need to stop being a shithead long enough to be on my side, too."
"I'm a consequence that should matter to you."
Their gaze held his, demanding an answer even as they wanted to flip the chair backward and make sure he remembered this conversation. The scent of their mantle was oppressive, hot copper and dirt baking in their unwavering fury.

Breath fled, and for a moment the world was not so clear. Pulsing pain, the taste of iron, the searing grip. It all made the journey back to reality swift. Pain would do that.
“You. . .deserve. . .better. . .”
It came out as laboured wheezes. Eyes misty. The Chatelaine got what he wanted. If he deserved anything it was this, from Linden especially. His hands raised slowly, finding the Ogre’s shoulders, and unless Linden had other plans, he simply hugged his motley mate - as tight as his breathless body would allow, despite the almost aggravating warmth the child of Summer radiated..
“You aren’t my enforcer, you are my friend. If anything hurt you because of me I couldn’t.”
His breath was soft.
“I just want to protect you, in my own, shithead way.”
His face brushed against Linden's shoulder. No tears tonight, if one suggested otherwise they must be going crazy.
“I’ll try. Try to be better.”
He had let them down. He had jeopardized their reputation. It was a burden that would keep him awake for a while.

Note to self. Dont piss of Linden. It was the first thing that jumps to their mind as they watch Archie buckle over. It was a selfish thought, the shock of the singular moment slowly processed in the Darklings mind.
“Holy shit” Riley mouthed in silent shock. They were cemented to the spot, they wanted to help Archie, move to help him up. But the rage that blazed off Linden halted them. Their mouth dry from the heat.

Mouth pressed into a line, Linden just stared past Archie as he sank into the hug; their shoulders jerked slightly, curbing the instinct to shake him off. In their current state being so close felt wrong, like they should be using the leverage to pick him up and slam his back into the table.
But as he regained his breath, Linden breathed deeply as well. It would take time to cool off, time away to process and think things over when their head cleared. As frustrated as they were, they knew they'd feel bad for how hard they'd hit him. Not yet, but it would come. Probably.
Split-knuckled hand coming to rest on the top of his head, Linden's voice was still rough with anger. "Don't try to protect me, Arch, it's annoying. And yeah, I do deserve better; so, fucking-- get on that." They meant to ruffle his hair to soften the statement, but it was halfhearted at best.
Pushing him away so they could look at each other, Linden sighed and went to get him a glass of water. A look was shared with Riley on the way, daring the Moth to comment.

Riley made no comment o the daring look shot their way by the Ogre. Instead, they just stood and moved to the kitchen, pulling a couple of beers from the Fridge. Handing one to Linden in passing before moving to Archie and handing him one as well.
Riley was lost for words, it seemed in this moment action spoke louder. Riley let out a soft sigh reflecting on the question on hand.
How do we be better?
Beneath that thought was another softer voice.
Can a Lost be better?
Riley takes a drink of their beer.

Tension. Something needed to be done, but strewing in their own frustration wasn’t going to be the thing that moved them forward.
“I’ll reach out to Chugunkin. Maybe he’ll have some ideas.”
It was a step forward, they would find a way to endure.
