The walls of the cave churn and slither, walls shifting to colourless bramble as the road parted open. They made it to the viaduct—the massive stone formation that arched over the termite-mound-like fortress nestled between the canyon. Gavin frowned, having expected to end up right in front of the entrance; that was the deal they had made with the Hedge when they entered. It couldn't cheat them like that, not unless the size of the Market proper had changed. Wayland confirmed suspicion, pointing to the low-hanging smoke that surrounded a sprawling tent city that had popped up around Sunset Canyon. It was active with movement, with shambling creatures of call kinds that were too small and varied to take proper stock of. It also wasn't in Gavin's file. The noise was enough to float upwind from the trail head they stood at.
As they took in the new environment, they registered that the other two weren't immediately present. Archie was a given already, but Riley had been snatched last minute.
The Oath held. Whatever was going on, the Hedge wasn't attacking them. The two could put two and two together, and the Thorns were likely cutting a deal with their wayward party to take the toll Fairy often demanded. As long as it wasn't a pound of flesh, right?

Reality ripples and parted like a mirage as Riley Sorsa snapped into existence. They were semi-transparent, and cast in a darker light as if night had fallen around them while in their arms was the... idea of a cat?

Having successfully landed at the intended destination, even though it had changed size and shape from what was expected, Gavin let out a brief sigh of relief. Waiting briefly to see whether or not Riley was going to escape the hounding chase of the Hedge and it's machinations. They'd stopped while still away from the destination, that was rarely a good sign.
Turning to Wayland, "Alright, they're taking a bit longer than I'd expect for someone who was going to succeed in escaping. I'm going to head back out and ..." Gavin trailed off when Riley appeared. The Hobgoblin caught his eye. Of course it was that one. That little extortionist. As much as Gavin hated that some of his charges had been caught, he was somewhat relieved to see the cat. There are far worse fates to be had in the endless depths of wonder and terror that is the hedge.
"Right, so as I was saying, I'm going to head back out there to help cut through some of the red tape keeping Archie busy. Should be easier getting around going my full speed and in territory I know." Looking at the Cat, "Archie will sense me coming his way and feel a discount is in order. Stay here; back in a tick." He wasn't so much giving an order as hoping the others would know he could handle it easier on his own.
There was a bit of a detent between Gavin and the cat in general. Gavin was adept at avoiding the dangerous areas and Hobs while out in the bush and it usually led to mild encounters with Hobs like the Cat in the off-chance Gavin was having a bad day. Gavin left the mostly harmless Hobs alone lest the Hedge replace a lost limb with something definitively more dangerous. Better the devil you know.
Even with that understanding, it was business for both of them.
Squaring off for the usual dance, Gavin flexed his claws while he lined up for a running start to shred another hole through the hedge and the bottom line of the Hob's racket.

They’d gotten split up. This is exactly the opposite of what Wayland wanted to happen. Especially since she and Gavin made it here just fine, and the two members of the Motley they need, who also happen to be the two members of the Motley most in need of aid when traversing the Hedge, didn’t make it there right away. The Ogre is frustrated, and ashamed, and worried. One booted foot taps restlessly on the ground while she and Gavin wait for the others to appear. The subtle tug of the Oath telling her that all was not lost helps her to be patient, but she’s halfway to insisting that the two of them dive back into the Hedge after the missing members of the party when Riley appears.
If the Darkling hadn’t appeared, she wouldn’t be letting Gavin go out alone. But he knows what he’s doing, and somebody needs to stay here with the moth. She watches the Beast go, before crossing the distance towards the shadowy, semi-transparent figure. “Riley, are you alright?” She asks with concern in her voice. Normally she’d be suspect of even a familiar face appearing from out of the Hedge, but the Oath between them is true. This is her Motley-mate. She glances down at the cat in their arms, intensely curious. But first things first, her attention returns to the Bright One. “Do you need anything? Are you hurt?”

“ I'm fine” The moth said in a dry echoing tone. Their new shadow form wisped softly in the dry air, almost intangible, their once bright light was now an eerie dim glow within the mass of swirling darkness. Their shape seemed more moth-like, with exaggerated legs and arms, and the drifting shadows almost wing like.
“Archie should be joining us soon unless someone misled me” Riley says looking down at the cat like creature in their arms.
“I’ll be fine and am guaranteed access to the market. Are you alright?”
The darkling was not fond that they had been exploited this way, but they had a mission and what to do about their new debt had to wait.

As Gavin charged, he rippled through the shadowy form of Archie Hartmann, causing him to ski to a halt. The raptor talons shaved the slate like butter. Another multitude of Cat purred happily in the Fairest's arms, and the clump in Riley's chirped in response to the Razorhand's comment. Though it was impossible to tell, they somehow knew it was a smug gesture. The shadows leapt from both parties, shifting and rippling in a tower of abyssal power as the young man stepped into the light. "United as promised! Let us get this show on the road," he said, grinning widely. As the creature moved, the image flickered to the jagged teeth and yellow eyes like the light of a dying candle.

“Well that was certainly an experience! Think I will stick to the bar scene from now on. This is the Broker by the way, he will be assisting us. Did everyone make it through better than not? Riley - was the puppy any help?”

It wouldn't have been much of a journey had he failed to stop before entering the brambles; it would have been a pointless one though. He sauntered back to the others, relieved.
Looking over the condition of his companions they seemed relatively intact, at least physically.
"Right, safe and sound," Gavin said partly to reassure himself and partly as a feeling of accomplishment. "Making friends along the way are we?" he said loosely to the motley and looking at the varied manifestations of the Broker, knowing it had greedily taken its toll. He was still confident and proud of the outcome. If the others knew all the nightmares in the dark he had safely led them around by picking the path he did, instead of randomly wandering through, they'd be happy with the outcome too. At least this way it wasn't the most dangerous part of the journey, that part was ahead of them.
"Just going to give this a quick refresher." Gavin pulled out the file provided by Bastion and reviewed it. In some of the margins Gavin added some notes on the current findings of the Market outskirts.

“Yeah, I’m fine-” she starts to tell Riley, before being interrupted by the reappearance of the last member of their party. And suddenly being joined by a fifth. She eyes the newcomer with suspicion, before her gaze darts back to the Chatelaine. “Yeah, we’re good. You alright?” She asks, taking a couple steps towards him to close the distance, so she can confirm with her own eyes that both he and Riley are whole.
… Which, they’re not of course. They got lost in the Hedge. And Riley is looking a little transparent. And Wayland couldn’t stop that, couldn’t help. And she can’t help now, except to keep going and try to make sure nothing else befalls her comrades.
She keeps an eye on the newcomer. She has absolutely no idea who he is, and she definitely doesn’t trust him not to be a danger.

"The puppy was helpful if only to give this guy more time to barter." The moth was starting to realize now that the Broker had taken more advantage of them than they thought. It seemed Archie and him had made a deal as well, which they figured involved themself. It was sounding like this Hob was double-dipping.
"Yeah, let's get into the market. " The translucent shadow of a darkling said.
"Gavin lead on?"

Gavin shares that the fortress has a lift that brings one to the first level of the layered Market, which was unfortunately way up at the top. One gains entry by swearing an oath-based agreement about one's behaviour within in order to gain a license to trade. Nothing awful: a standard agreement to obey the King's Law and to honour the bargains the merchants are haggled to accept; violence when unhappy with what is haggled will result in violence returned, as well as rescinding the license until tithe is paid.
One could trade anything, really, aside from what was already owed; the Hobs were uninterested in swapping currency with each other by proxy. The rarity of items increased the deeper into the bowels of the canyon one chose to tread.
The names were straight forward: the first tier was simply referred to as the Artisan District. From his notes, they were to expect a spanning market with established shops etched into the stone, lit with lava rivers that cut through the streets. Tapestries and street vendors tout various Goblin Fruits, Hedgespun tailors, and magic trinkets.
The camp itself was not in the notes, though there as an added addendum that the Sunset Prince's hunting party a few months back encountered a Title, and fleeing denizens that may be nesting around the Market. Low and behold...there may be Huntsmen as well.

"Right, so it looks like these lot are the survivors in the wake of one of Them mucking about in the area. We're probably going to see a lot moving through here. Going to be some desperate looking folks around. Be on your guard. That desperation leads to some making choices we might regret."
Gavin looks Wayland up and down, gauging that she could handle herself. "I think Wayland should be on point, I can give directions from the back. I'll get a good view of the scenario from there and it'll give these lot the correct impression that you're scarier than me. They know not to mess with me and they treat me like I'm not worth messing with, for the most part. I'm hard to miss seeing too and I can move quickly to intercept if required." The other Lost were suddenly reminded of his animalistic traits and terrifying speed.
"You two stay tight in the middle and no one go off on your own. The desperate and ... pragmatic people around here are dangerous. The general promise entering the market is rigged to protect the market from outsiders, not outsiders from each other. There are slavers and slave traders in there. We could also run into a huntsman, privateers, or worse. We'd need to get a deal with the Goblin King to get better protection coming here. Things to worry about later."
Gavin points in one direction, those who look don't see anything that stands out from the rest of the area. "If you look in that direction, under that one tattered red scrap hanging from a banner stand, there's trouble in that area. We have to stay away and we're going to skirt around. There's a few in that area that mean us trouble if they knew of our presence. I'd prefer to not have to leave another dozen bodies in my wake for the new arrivals to the area to learn what I teach best." Gavin makes eye contact with the Broker ensuring it knows he's paying special attention to its activities.
"We're heading about twelve tents in this direction here before hanging a Louie."

Gedeihen removes a grain of sand from under one of his nails as Gavin glares at him. "Hm. Well, it is not my area of expertise but I do not think these ones would know your reputation, Herr Graves. You do not carry the spark of a Keeper. If we wait until evening, you may find your trek easier to manage."

The cat had a point. Gavin was acclimated to this place as it was before. Things have changed and there are more locals that have no idea who and what he is than prior. Reestablishing that reputation wasn't his top priority at the moment.
"Right, yeah," Gavin offered a hesitant nodding acknowledgement to the soundness of the Hob's advice. "We'll wait to add that extra layer of prep. It's a bit taxing to be tossing contracts around though and we have to get back too. I like to keep a broad margin for handling problems too. Just going to do a quick dip off away to grab some stuff to keep me going. Hole up and lay low, I won't be long. Eat some of your trail mix too; get that taste of the real back in you."
Gavin devours a pair of generic Goblin Fruit to recoup his reserves before heading off to check his 'garden'. It had been a while, surely they should have grown back by now.
Returning from his little excursion with the light below the horizon, threatening to send the group into proper darkness, he emerges from the din. "Alright, good to pack up our things and go, yeah. Stretch your legs, soften your steps, do the woogie things that help. We're moving in five."
The group set off along the path with the plan: Gavin guides using Pathfinder to avoid the worst of the problems and subtly distracts for Wayland's passage while he is under the cloak of Light Shy. Wayland tries to stay hidden and follows the hidden guide's whispers and markings. Riley used their contract to obscure their presence and subtly distracted for Archie's passage. Archie tries to stay hidden and follows the hidden guide's whispers and markings.
Gavin hoped whatever deal was struck with the cat would keep it from selling out he and Wayland en route. It was best to tie the success of their arrive toward working together to keep that possibility from forming. If not, surely the cat knew limbs were expensive to replace.

She doesn’t like the idea of waiting. Staying put makes them a target. But she trusts the experts. She’s not sure why the experts are trusting a cat, and some hob from out of the hedge, but she’s not ready to argue that point yet. Not unless more goes wrong than it has. So while they wait for nightfall, Wayland is on watch. Nobody from her team is going to disappear on her again, not if she has anything to say about it. And nothing’s going to creep up on them either. (Or at least, she’ll make such creeping harder. Sometimes that’s all you can do.)
Another thing she’s not wild about? The idea of following whispered messages of people she can’t see. That just sounds like a recipe for losing your mind, or being mislead by some creature of the Hedge that saw them waiting for nightfall and made it’s own little plan to lead them away. But again, experts.
Mail is easier to move in than it’s often made out to be. People had to fight in it after all, have to fight in it if you’re one of the minority of people still choosing to wear such an archaic type of armor. It’s not an especially quiet kind of garment, but Wayland does the best she can as she sets off into the shadows, trying to keep Archie close behind her as she follows the hidden signs and whispered directions to keep out of sight.
