"That's not your daughter, Rob."
The woman's voice drifted from the window that didn't quite close all the way, a lace curtain bathed in gold casting the other two in silhouettes. From inside, Yazzie cracked her can of beer as she rested her head against the hot, sun baked wall of the rancher's house, while listening to her former neighbour bitch about her presence with a long-suffering smile. Nothing got past Simone.
It still stung.
"She hasn't lied to anyone. You've seen what was done to her," her father responded calmly. He had left the rifle loaded by the door, but that wasn't for their own. Yazzie winked at her sister, whose mouth was drawn thin in an exasperated frown while she kept her attention on her Nintendo Switch.
"Bad things have been happening since she was spirited away. Strange sightings from more than just me, and you know that. Desecration. She doesn't even go by one of our names anymore. Probably grabbed it off the internet thinking we're all the same group." Simone was pleading, her own sorrow creeping into her voice and raw on the Arrow's tongue. "I think-"
"I think it's time for you to get your groceries in the fridge," Robert cut in smoothly, an assured pat resounding as the figures drifted from view. Her sister looked up from Animal Crossing, scratching at the scab she got when the two had gotten into a scrap. Dropping the Mask and Bargaining with your own family came with some shock, and the other wasn't convinced until problem solving tactics from childhood brought them both to joyful tears.
"You sure you made the right choice? You said the city was safer," she ventured. Nothing got past her either. Yazzie ticked her head from side to side, flinching as her wild hair got stuck in the wood grain and tugged. Her sister snickered as she started unhooking it, without hesitation this time.
"Those weren't my rituals. Those weren't my people. I'm not going to hunt for a spirit that I don't serve, just so it can sate its blood lust," she explained. The Ashen Hunt would pass without her, along with the Freehold Oath like so much dust on the rock. She would serve here, with her own family's protections. Here she would heal. Here she had real power.
The Court wouldn't have their secrets.
