Bad things happen to people all the time. Why the fuck should any of us be different?
Think about it. Murder. Kidnapping. Drugs. Car accidents. Cancer. Getting struck by lightning. There's no rhyme or reason to it. We're on a pointless sphere flying through space, dealing with the horseshit shoveled to us by destiny, or fate, or God, or plain dumb luck. None of it means anything, especially for the Lost.
People try to explain it, because of course they do. They're people. People struggle with the idea that they are somehow any less in the loop about the awful in their lives than a fly about to get smoked by a swatter.
The second you accept that bad things are going to happen to people, life gets a lot easier. Mourning is natural, sadness comes and goes, but acceptance, that's how you find what comes next.
There's treasures to be found in the terrible. Murder leads a body that needs to be disposed of. That Benz they stole needs new paint and new plates. Drugs need to be smuggled. It's all about how you slice it.
The awful is coming. It always will, especially to people like us. Once you accept that basic fact, you're halfway there.
The question that you need to ask yourself after that is harder: what are you going to do with your pile of shit?
