Linden Riley Sorsa "Oh me, oh my - Riley! You are lacking company, get over where - eat this chocolate!"Upon the Moth's general approach they were pinged and targeted, the plate of sweets was back in play and the trio was ready to make some hard decisions - inside with the wine, or outside with the lights.

Riley had just caught the trail end of Firebringers conversation on their way to Linden and Archie. Motley. It stung more than they expected. But it made sense. "uh hey, yeah chocolate. I could use that"
They Linden an apologetic glance. They had been running around and hardly had spent any time with Linden after dragging them out here.
"Sorry"
They picked chocolate off the plater plopped it in their mouth had chewed, and quickly grabbed two more.
"So what's up?

Linden accepted the apology with a small smile and a single-shouder shrug, trying not to let on that they had been bothered. "Just managed to guess Archie's a gin man, unless he was pulling my leg." They lifted their eyebrows at him, mostly teasing but with a hint of tension beneath it. "I haven't checked out the lights yet, are they especially romantic? On cacti?" Their question was as much for Riley as anyone, since they were the only one Linden knew had been outside.

“Why would I lie? Do I look like a vodka guy? I button up all the buttons on my shirt, thank you very much! Either way - Riley, here is your chocolate. I mean don’t start in the Gin is pretty much vodka argument, but the way it tends to linger - its nice. I appreciate the staying power. Call it an anchor. Either way!”
He finally set the chocolates aside and motioned towards the door.
“How about we walk the path and find out. Cacti are the most romantic plants if you ask me, because once you get past their prickly exterior they are sweet on the inside. Like people.”
He would wait for one of the pair to take the lead, it wasn’t his place to dictate where the conversation would go at this point.

" They looked-" The moth paused for the words to describe them. Romantic, hypnotic, distracting, blinding. Riley struggled to find the words for a moment.
"From what I saw, they're pretty. Let's check em out" Anything to get the topic of Fire and Rowan forming a Motley out of their head. Using that as the sign to move towards the garden's Riley took the first steps towards the door.
"Gin huh? That tracks. Bow tie, suit. I'd peg you for Gin."

In a supreme act of graciousness, Linden did not try to riff off of Riley's last comment, and instead began heading toward the door out to the illuminated cacti. "Who are you comparing to a cactus?" they asked Archie, teasingly suspicious. They didn't think he actually meant anything at all by it, Archie was just Talking.
Linden stepped outside and help the door for their friends, looking around. "It's prettier than I expected. No offense, Archie," they amended quickly, "I think I just usually think of lights all in with leaves. But it's nice. What made you want to host a Valentine event, you got a soft spot for it?" They let the door swing shut behind the last person, one hand returning to their pocket as the other held their wine.

“Thank you Riley, I feel basic now.”
He said with a smile as they wandered out to start down the illuminated path, away from the building, the cool night air filled with the backdrop of the city that still surrounded them.
“Well I mean aren’t we all a little prickly? People say I can be annoying and I get that - its own prickle of a sort. Though I like to think that once you get past it all it comes back around and people can see I just want to help out a little.”
He took the lead for the moment as they slunk down the path.
“Love it really, the whole idea of Valentine's day. And blah, blah, blah, yes it is all corporate - but so are probiotics in our yogurt and MSG ruining Chinese food. But I am a sucker at the end of the day for the soft things. If a movie wants me to cry, I probably will. I am a sucker for a A Walk to Remember.”
He turned around and walked backwards as he looked to the two of them.
“But really, it's all about a dream isn’t it? About what we want for ourselves. I…”
A momentary falter as he glanced at the lights, turning back around on his heels to casually lead from the front once more.
“I want to see if I can help people make their dreams be real, and not just something we experience when we sleep. I want to show myself I can actually do it. I need to make up for all the times I didn’t really...So who knows, maybe it is just a penance? Maybe I am just trying to convince myself I am half decent at this whole dog and pony show.”
A moment of abrupt silence.
“Worst case, the wine is good, and the chocolate is cheap the next day.”
A good chuckle.

Riley opened their mouth to protest the comment about Archie being basic. They hadn't meant it that way. Why were they such an ass sometimes?
Walking through the garden the twilight dancers' eyes moved across the twinkling lights upon the desert plants. If they never had to see another cactus again they would have been happy. But there was some beauty to be found here.
Riley chuckled slightly as Archie expressed his appreciation of Valentine's day, in such an Archie manner. For the Moth, the last few years Valentine's day had been either to entertain the drunk, lonely or those looking for some spice for their evening. They could hardly remember what it had meant before they were lost.
They gave Linden a slight glance as Archie had a moment of vulnerability talking about making dreams. There was doubt and worry within his voice. A selfish thought intruded into their mind, had they made a mistake to sign with this manager?
Riley chuckled slightly. It was a defense mechanism to shake off the shame, and the awkwardness brought by it.
"Get all that from Valentine's day? I guess I hadn't given V-day that much thought or credit " The moth shook their head before quickly adding.
" I don't know what you're trying to prove to yourself, Archie. This is sweet and all but-" They gesture around to the lights and the gathering.
"Is this how you do that?" It wasn't a judgmental tone.

Listening, Linden sent a quiet, fond smile Archie's way. His talk of dreams, the way they pulled at people's desires. Penance was a curious concept to invoke, the Ogre unsure of how worthiness played into this at all. But they struggled to refine the question, caught by the feeling that to dig would be prying at something private to Archie.
"Half decent seems like a low benchmark... I'd say you're medium well. Is that any different? Medium rare, maybe. Like a good steak." Sipping their wine, the Ogre looked down at Archie with compassionate antagonism. They imagined a sense of truth and vulnerability in his words, but to give too much attention seemed a deathblow to the moment, to Linden. At least, it would be if they were the one speaking.

“It really isn’t much, is it?”
A light hearted acknowledgement of the entire night's proceedings as the two commented on it.
“Color me at a loss of what else there is to do. Wine selection, wasn’t even me - made sure I tapped someone who knew what they were doing. I know it all seems cold in the end, but it's at least nice, semi-normal, and a taste of reality, right?”
He didn’t seem to be asking that rhetorically.
“It isn’t the fact that it's Valentine's day really, you could choose Arbor Day if you felt like it - just more fanfare and food options around today. In the end what it lacks in personality it makes up for it with a nice generic sense of inclusion. The party that is.”
They came a little further down the path.
“I find when I have nothing better to do, why not throw a bash, or get some people together right? There isn’t much else I can do with my time so I will settle for watching people live their best lives. So at the very least I hope you are having a good time. There should be a case or two left of Wine by the way, looks like I over compensated. You're free to take some when you leave.”
He tried to brush it all off as just talking about a party, but as the darkness around them grew, and it was just the lights around them even the city seemed to quiet. The Fairest’s mood had dropped a peg despite the chipperness that he exuded. Even as he tried to escape the attention the spotlight of his mantle still dimly shone around him.

"That's not wha-" Riley shot linden a look of mild annoyance, as the Chatelaine willfully twisted their intended words. The moth's antenna flicked, once than twice in mild annoyance.
The Fairest seemed determined to undermine his work this evening one way or another. It left Riley in an awkward position, he was their manager only for a couple of weeks at this point. They had gotten to know each other but the dynamic still felt transactional. Calling him out might be crossing a line. While placating him with platitudes felt hollow.
"Well Its been a nice bit of reality. Besides who doesn't like a party?" Riley offered up. Sure some of the guests tonight were less than the partying types, but there had been moments.
"I'll take you up on that wine for sure. Can't hurt to have a few bottles around." The darkling chuckled slightly and looked back out at the lights.
"I don't much like lights," they say flatly after a bit. "Not at the best of times" They kicked at the path with their heel for a moment. "But these are pretty. Thanks for puttin' this together Archie, beside gave me a reason to get Linden dressin' sharp as a knife"
They turn and smirk at Linden.

Linden's free hand descended onto Archie's shoulder, harder than strictly necessary, and gave it a good squeeze. "Sounding like a bit of a sad sack there, my dude," they admonished him cheerfully. Their own worries and discomfort were of tertiary interest and importance in the face of whatever this moment was. Maybe they were reading more into it than they should, but forlorn talk of reality and inclusion, and downplaying his own organizational skills, left Linden in territory they were much more comfortable with.
"Riley's right, how else are you going to see me looking this good? It's practically a crime." They flashed a grin, poking fun at themself. "You've got a good heart, trying to bring folks together- and if you talk much more about what small potatoes this is I'm going to make you drink that backstock of wine with me until you change your mind. I promise I will win, but you are welcome to try and outdrink me." It was a bit more like bullying than comforting.
"Sometimes its just good to have an excuse to drink with friends and look at cacti."

He was sounding sad? Decor was off...It was a wince for both - thankfully he couldn’t be seen facing forward. He had that going for him.
“Right? I will have to make sure to either have dragged, bribed, or guilted to all the fancy events so that we have an excuse to see this side of you more often. While I understand the value of comfy clothes - you have to admit, the second glances are worth it sometimes. As a bowtie man, I know that feeling all too well and I live for it.”
He turned and smiled a grin with the top row of his gapped teeth showing. He raised his glass.
“To more special nights where we have an excuse to sharpen Linden up.”

Riley Raised a glass in response to Archie.
"I can toast to that, to special nights, fine clothes, and pretty lights" Riley smiled with an almost contagious smile. Realizing Archie and them may not have toasted like this before they quickly add.
"Eye contact! A toast without eye contact means your bound to have bad sex" Riley then realized a toast between three people always made this difficult. They laughed slightly at the situation.
"or at least, it's the effort that counts"
