Mantle Progression:
In Dark Harvest, Mantle is a measure of a Changeling's dedication to their Court's philosophy and the price they are willing to pay in exchange for its protections and favor. The Seasons are conceptual entities in their own right. Each Season has its own ritual requirements, not unlike a deity, and adhering to the tenets of a Court and carrying out the Court's rituals is the equivalent of worship. This worship offers power to the Seasons - which allows for wards to be crafted. These Wards force the denizens of Arcadia to follow the rules of the Bargain, rather than their own capricious laws.
Rituals and adherence to Court philosophy is important to the defense of the Freehold. Those who contribute, advance their Court's goals, honor and actively add to the rituals, and who act as paragons of their Court will earn the right to purchase additional levels of Mantle and access the opportunities that come from high rank within their Court. Raising Mantle is not guaranteed. Each rise represents a significant step in a Changeling's connection to the Season (and likely one's rank in the Season, as well).
Bear in mind that most characters do not rise above Mantle 3. High Mantle represents a character willing to sacrifice incredible amounts of themselves for their Season and take on roles of great authority. The more and more Mantle a character gains, the less and less of a 'normal person' they become. Instead, they act as Avatars of their Season's will. They aren't normal people anymore.
Visually, the Mantle will symbolize why the particular Lost follows their Court's philosophy. As their Mantle grows in strength, the symbols should become more clear and more powerful. When designing your Mantle, please keep this theme of growth in mind, rather than stacking general symbols of the Court’s Heraldry. Your Mantle should reflect your character. Why flowers? Why blood? Why that particular smell or flash of colour?
For the purposes of this setting, further Mantle purchases beyond the initial free dot will be screened for meeting the requirements set out by the Court. The Storyteller will be scrutinizing requests for Mantle purchases to ensure the purchase has been well and truly earned. Simply acting as the vehicle of a particular emotion and providing minor services to the crown will only advance a character’s rank once beyond their initial pledge.
So what are these expectations?
Mantle 1-2:
Most of the population of a Court is made up of this sort of citizen. A Changeling of this rank is generally accepted as contributing in one way or another, and are called upon if their particular skill serves to address a current problem. Advancing beyond the initial pledge is being recognized as a dedicated Courtier, but it’s never too late to view another Court as better suited for one’s needs and personal views.
Mantle 3:
The middle nobility of a Court, the Changeling has shown their dedication to their Court is above and beyond the norm. They are often operating as an officer or representative of a political belief. It is extremely rare for a Courtier to not be sworn under a Knight at this juncture, unless it’s directly in service to the Monarch themselves. More expectations and duties are applied to these individuals. They are regarded as leaders in their own right, leaned on by their Knights. A Courtier rarely shifts to another dedication at this point unless something drastic happens to alter their perspective.
Mantle 4:
The aristocracy of the Court, the Changeling is a strict adherent to their Court's tenets and lifestyle. They are often lorekeepers of rituals, and usually are a pledged Knight, if not a Monarch themselves. Usually a Courtier of this Mantle has been pledging to the Season and its Avatar, the Monarch, for years, or simply tout extreme experience. If they favour the local bearer of the Crown, they often take a Knight’s pledge. Knights are recognized as the leader of a large organization of Lost, either geographically by presiding over a fiefdom, or through their authority serving an essential function in the Freehold.
Mantle 5:
Seasonal royalty. These Changelings are full blown icons of the Season’s favour, the Mantle breathing life into their auras as they affect the environment around them. While it is very easy to manifest the crown at such a rank of dedication, this does not entail that the Season will recognize the Changeling as the proper voice and avatar, as the Monarch is the physical manifestation of its will. Some royal Courtiers do not even wish to have the crown, as it comes with great sacrifice to their own personality and alters how they perceive and connect with reality.
