“As Jewish as Jesus.”
He nodded, “In other words, yes. Not as consummate a practitioner as I was when I was a kid but I have always made sure to stay active. Never have missed my dues, and always try to give a little more where I can or help out here or there. It's a nice little unwritten rule. Community needs something, donations show up quickly and no one knows where from.”
He opened the door to the patio, and motioned for Solomon to go first as they hit the cool night air where the smoke wouldn’t catch the ire of anyone in the building. “I mean, I don’t know as much as an Elder, and I’m far from able to trade barbs with the Rabbi, but we do what we can. It is like our own community. If we don’t work for the collective what are we really doing, right? Eventually if it was all for one, we would devour ourselves or worse yet, sacrifice ourselves to worse monsters for petty reasons like when Andromeda was chained to the rock to pay for Casssiopeia’s pride. Greeks, am I right?”
He tipped his glass to the tidbit of mythology. KrakenboxSolomon

"...Yeah. I suppose you're finding yourself with more donations to give these days." The Spring courtier had been mostly absent, and now was dipping into events outside of the Coronations and throwing events like these. Solomon assumed he was looking to stake power among his own ilk, now that he was more comfortable with his own skin.
The smoke swirls as the doors open to the desert evening.
"What changed your mind? That you're not part of this," he gestured back to the other Lost, "...collective."
The paper crackled, trying to remember the folklore the other Fairest was referencing. He never did make a habit of reading, but he knew stories. "I'm not following. Andromeda was used as a shield for her mother's sin. Then was saved, and married off."
Was he worried about being thrown to the wolves for pissing off the nobility? Or was Perseus the monster? Maybe Archie just hated marriage.
He had no clue what he was getting at.

“You eventually just have to accept that things aren’t going back to normal. There is no normal. The amount of effort to do anything normal is extraneous. Vegas is safe, I love it here, I wouldn't have set up shop if I didn’t. But, it can feel like its own prison of paradise sometimes when you don’t have access to the world and rather just what is at your fingertips.”
He stopped to sip at the win he had collected as Solomon asked the part of the Myth.
“If we don’t protect ourselves I don’t see us being too far gone from chaining one another to rocks to appease darker forces. So before we ever get to that point I think it is better to try and make this whole community thing work so we can all stay safe.”
Dark, the thought of sacrificing one another to avoid having to go back to the world warped by dreams. Not wrong more than likely, seeing as the Fair Folk were one for theatrics and deals more or less. It would all be a game until there was just one.
“What about Sir Solomon though, what brings you all the way to the Meadows?”
He made his tone a tad bit more upbeat
“Something tells me it wasn’t the bright lights, and the chance of hitting the jackpot ."

The demonic Fairest stared blankly at the skyline as Archie describes normalcy and how much he loves the guaranteed safety of the Freehold, a dismissive snort sending a plume of smoke at the bemoaning of Lost challenges for travel.
"Uriel recruited me on the Trod," he said after a moment. "I got myself lost like an idiot. Distance doesn't matter in there."
Flicking the coiling ash over the edge of the balcony, he leaned on the rail.
"So, what do you do to protect it? If we're going to follow that thread."

“I keep the profiles of those looking to make something of themselves at the right level. Finding that space between outlet, career, and safety that no mundane person in my position can consider, and making sure that TMZ and the like aren’t out there making mortals come sniffing. Unlike LA we do not have the same structure to keep things underwraps - that is something on the next level there - but if they didn’t every week another Lost would be on TV.”
There was a challenge in being under the bright lights and not using every advantage to seize the ring. Ogre’s in the NFL, Fairest on Talk Shows, etc. He may not be risking life and limb but he was doing something that Summer in Las Vegas may have been incapable of doing.
“So recruited by the Queen, serving as a Knight - what are you tasked with doing by her Majesty? I assume there are more specific responsibilities doled out then simply get the bad guys.”

The corner of Solomon's eye pinches as Archie describes his role in Lost society.
Kai's beaming presence from earlier was quickly lost in the Summer's roiling anger, the boots of his human heel hissing as cloven hoof prints melted into the floor of the balcony. "The Queen didn't have me kneel for a Knight's pledge while I was dying in the thorns. She was the Knight Commander of the Tolltakers at the time. My service right now among the Iron Spears pertains to internal security."
Another cigarette was lit, to replace the dead filter dropped into the sand below.
"You're talking about being a chess master of people's destiny's, so they don't fly too close to the sun. But all I'm hearing is you encouraging reckless attention seeking, so you can pat yourself on the back when you take credit for both their success and clipping their wings. You want it both ways? You're telling me it's altruistic? Or does the Crown of Arcadia whisper how gracious you are to your subjects?"
Holy shit. This Knight was the opposite of chivalrous.

It reeked.
“A very dismal take on the whole situation if you ask me.”
He shrugged and sipped his wine as he mulled his words for a moment.
“But I suppose culture and hope is danger isn’t it - makes us forget about the enemy so really it is an unnecessary distraction. But sadly it is what we do to fend off the rot that is paranoia and rage and the general stagnation of our society into barbarity. So I suppose we will have to contend with what I do.”
Wine.
“However, don’t think I don’t appreciate what you do - Let’s just hope the huntsman’s shadow you cast stays just.”
He took a moment to stare at the Knight.
“However, I am not naïve enough to believe that the cage we build are meant for just a particular person, because when they are empty there will always be someone who wants to see them filled. History has a funny way of reminding us of that.”
He let that linger for just a touch.
“So, Internal Security? Just for the Spear or are you empowered by the Four Seasons.”
He braced himself for some of the greater good bullshit. He had already heard the stories of when angry little men sought to enforce their ideas. He wasn’t going to tolerate the attitude without clapping back.

"Dismal is one way to describe my outlook. Accurate is another, for both circumstances. I hear Freeholds do just fine with culture without fame and fanfare. But I guess I'm a bit old fashioned." He seemed engaged now, like sniping was the only way he knew how to communicate, and the normalcy of adversaries brought him comfort.
"What's got you so bleak to compare your own society to a prison and a cage when the idea of confinement is most of our worst nightmares? I understand you're putting a spin on my official position, but the pun on the term really does highlight the hypocrisy of offences taken. It's my job to check in, Hartman. No need to call me a servant of the Gentry."
He chuckles darkly, "As for the extent of my authority, what's your take? Do you think each Court should only police itself or open one another to a different perspective? You seem leery of zealotry, so, that thought should bring you some form of comfort."

“Just like we do, funny - eh?”
Archie wasn’t the only person in the world doing this. If he went to Los Angeles he would be doing the same thing on a smaller scale due to the sheer amount of competition. Simply because the Summer didn’t have an appreciation of the benefits of this provided didn’t discredit it, and it would be an difficult undertaking to convince Archie otherwise. Without the ability to express oneself they would have a lot more pain.
“Servant? I would never, I am just acutely aware that the specter of danger is a mighty tool because compliance comes far easier when people are angry or afraid - something my society has felt first hand. If I believed humanity could survive without an enemy I would be more optimistic. In this case we can all be thankful that there is at least a tangible threat to keep the attention.”
They were still humans when all was said and done.
“If the Queen of Spring, and the Kings of Winter and Autumn welcome your presence - who am I to judge, checks and balances, right?”
It didn’t do much to ease his mind, but now it began to make more sense why the likes of Chugunkin had a place.

"No one's stopping you from asking questions or challenging any of my opinions, Hartman." The moonlight Fairest didn't appear to be catching Archie's concerns about the rise of political policing, and its parallels to Gestapo or even the OVRA.
Or worse, he was callous enough to not give a rat's ass.
"Propaganda and fear is a game of Mirrors. I read auras to see if people are getting sick, and follow up on potential cracks in the foundation. The fact that I'm not busy is a good thing. I like Ogres not collapsing a high-rise because their Fetch shot their partner. Sometimes hope gives people ideas, like revealing themselves to their core touchstones. I like not having a Spring courtier go on a bender with their understanding of Desire, and end up kidnapping their fling, thinking it's destined love. Sometimes people can't be happy with having enough." The detail of the scenarios were a little alarming, and possibly hinting at some experience.
"Sometimes it has nothing to do with grips on reality, and the person's personality just isn't cut out for this life. Then I monitor, so they have some semblance of the gilded cage you describe. Does that dispel some of the mystery?"

This is how he was spending his Valentines? Good lord he felt like in this moment he had made poor life choices and if he didn’t get out now things would just go downhill.
“Well you know, this has been educational and very interesting. . .discourse. However I should probably make my rounds and see how everyone else is doing you know - let you finish up your smoke, you know, etcetera.”
He offered a handshake again, and when taken, his own was limp and unenthusiastic. Even an attempt to be cheeky and see if this guy was full authoritarian yielded no results…Maybe the wyrd had abandoned Archie as he had been blind to the wishes of others for a while now. Oh right - let go of the handshake. Probably held it too long. Oh well.
“You have a good night, have plenty of chocolate, there is also sparkling water if you want something spicy....Bye.”
Archie walked away, eyes somewhat dead after having to deal with the most positive person he had met in some time.
