Lotus approached Dan holding out her colleague a glass of water. "Water?" She said simply, glancing out at the tables that had been arranged. "You set for the evening?" The wizened Job in all this was rather simple compared to Croupier and Hua Yuan. She didn't mind really. In fact Lotus was rather curious to see what Yuan and Croupier had planned for this evening. A simple game was one thing, but the winter courtier imagined loftier plans danced behind the curtain.

"Hey, thanks." Dan smiled and accepted the glass. He took a quick sip and set the glass in one of the removable steel cupholders lining the table.
Taking a moment to appraise his handiwork, Dan nodded with some degree of confidence, "Yeah, I think so. Hua's going to make the announcement once he's all set, and then we just see where we go from there."
Though this was not Dan's first night behind the felt, he couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation at the coming event. By now, it was a familiar sensation - the same one that crept in every night before his shift, but now it was amplified as if everything was riding on it. He and Hua had been kicking the plan back and forth ever since Imbolc, but the dream really became a reality once Henley told them about the place and the opportunities it presented to them.
"Should be a good crowd, I think." Croupier added with a measure of optimism, "Otherwise I'm heading up and giving one of those pools a shot."

"Thank you both so much for accepting to do this," the Playmate offered as he joined the two Changelings. Word was spreading from mouth to mouth about the card table, but there was still some time before the first guests arrived. "Think of today as a proof of concept. If we pull this off without a hitch, I would like to make this into a long-term venture."
He smiled, all pearly canines and cat-like playfulness. "I've provided the starting capital and I'll be happy as long as don't fall short. Any extra will be split between you two, as payment for your services. Lotus - you're on security. You have a sharp eye, so I would ask you to look out for potential cheaters. I'd be nice to know if people were using Contracts to tip the scales, but oh well. Croupier - you're the hands. I trust your experience in this matter. It isn't a high stakes game, so go easy on our guests. I will keep the players coming and make them stay longer. Questions?"

"None that I can think of, Boss." Dan shook his head and gave his hands a quick clearing. It was a force of habit common to dealers, but Dan could not for the life of himself remember if he picked it up from the casino, his time in Arcadia, or in the life he had even before that. Some things were just engrained in a person that they had no starting point, they just were.
"I was thinking No-Limit Texas Hold'Em for the game." he added after taking a sip, "Any casino worth their salt has it, it's easy enough for players to catch on, and enough tension to keep them hooked." So long as their money holds out, he refrained from adding. "If the players want a different game, we can always change it up."
Taking a quick glance at his watch, Dan asserted, "Good to go whenever you guys are. Let's make some money!"

Having made his announcement, Henley made his way over and took a long drink of some white sangria-looking drink he had poured on his way. He loosened his bowtie a little and took a seat at the end of the table, hooking one leather-clad foot over the opposite knee.
"There we go. Party's getting started, now I have time to sit on my ass for a bit. How are we all tonight?"
He looked to Lotus and flashed a bombastic smile.
"I don't think I've had the pleasure. I'm Nate Henley, with Outback."

"Seems straightforward enough," Lotus said with a nod and a smile as Yuan laid out the evening before them.
"Do you prefer I give warnings to cheaters or I inform you first of cheaters before I ask them to leave on the spot?" It was a basic practice question.
When Henly joined She turned her attention from her co-workers of the evening and gave him a welcoming smile.
"A pleasure to finally meet you Mr Henley. You have quite the reputation forming" He had made quite a name for himself and outback of late and anyone paying attention had heard his name prior.
She leaned a little to present a hand to him as he was already seated, to give him a greeting handshake.
"Welcome to the table, may I do a quick safety check sir? I apologize, but given last time I want to ensure everyone feels comfortable and safe." It was her job after all. In fact the Riddle seeker was beyond professional. Striking a precarious balance between charming and welcoming, while also establishing her role. If Henly agreed, the check would be quick and efficient, doing a quick well-practiced pat of the jacket and legs to ensure no weapons, or cards were on his person.
"Do you play cards often?" She asked to break the ice of the search.

Henley flashed a polite smile at the compliment. "You're too kind. Thank you for your support to the Freehold lately, as well. Many hands make light work, even in wartime," he replied with a nod as he took the hand and gave it a pump. When she asked to do a safety check, he chuckled and raised his hands like he was under arrest. "By all means. I think the average toddler is better than I am with weapons, but I appreciate your attention to detail. I do like a game, but not all that often. When you gamble for a living on the markets, often, you want things that are sure when you're off work."
He gave the table a little knock.
"But it's my party, and I'll lose money to you folks if I want to, right?"

Yuan smiled with pride over his motley mate. "Thank you, Lotus Eater, but just notify me. I don't want you to take the heat over something like cheating."
He checked his watch one more time. "Alright everyone. Places! I'm off to find us some players. Hopefully someone interesting," he smirked at Nate. "Let's show them a good time, yeah?"
Yuan launched into the crowd like a man on a mission. And technically, he was. The Beast took to people like fish to water. He seamlessly joined existing conversation, started new ones and was generally being is affable self. Sometimes, more as a challenge to himself than anything else, he went to someone of higher standing, inviting them over for some entertainment. The smell of flowers followed him and clung to him as exhilaration washed over him. It felt good. It felt right. To have helped organize this, to help people get together after the recent problems the freehold had weathered.

Dan flashed Henley a warm smile as he sat at the table. Giving the cards a customary wash, he nodded to the Ogre, "Welcome to the table, Mr. Henley. Always a pleasure to have you."
More people began to fill into the room and take their seats at the table. The sight of it gave Dan a tingle of excitement that climbed with each new seat being occupied. He made sure to greet each one, even if he didn't know their name. Especially if he didn't know their name. There were a few, more prominent members of the community who came to sit at the table.
With the washing done, Dan settled into his role not as Dan Miller, but as Croupier, and cut the deck he held before depositing it into the automatic shuffler in the middle of the table. The opposing color deck came out, and with another cutting motion, Dan held the deck in one hand and started passing cards to each of the players, explaining the rules of the game as he went.
"The game, ladies and gentlemen, is No Limit Texas Hold'Em." he explained in the even, practiced tone of a career card shark - one who could sit in front of a pot of millions of dollars and not bat an eye. "Small blind is to my left, big blind is to his and is the one to make the first bet. Nothing wild, and the sky's the limit."
With the last card dealt, Croupier leaned back in his chair, taking in each of the players in turn. They all sat like predators gathered around the carcass of a dead elephant; each waiting to take a bite out of the prize, and each other.
His own smile turned predatory as he tossed the Big Blind button and pointed to the man, "Your bet, sir."

Post by Buck Chasseur on Apr 9, 2022 21:50:39 GMT -8
The flood of Emerald influence was intense as Yuan dragged over high rollers as the bets began to escalate. When Yuan speaks with Zhi and Chugunkin, the latter was inspired to call out to the Sunset Prince himself for a round between them. The Playmate hoped that a game might restore some public morale to see two of the biggest feuders in the Spring conflict put it aside for the Coronation, and it would appear that the pair were accepting of the idea. Buck was eventually dragged away from Kai Rose and Lancelot, who had formed a small group with the Knight of Scales and the Summer Queen.
The Knight of Coin was making small talk with Lotus and Croupier, happily greeting Nate Henley and ordering bottle service and cigars for the Dawn Host. He was musing on Philicia establishing a pattern in the last couple of Coronations of asking greener members to guide the expectations of the event, before Buck's Mantle hit the table like a truck and Yuan offering a friendly wave over the Golden Hinde's shoulder.
"Where are the proceeds going to this evening?" Chasseur asked Croupier innocently, dumping a horrendous amount of chips that rapidly isolated those who could participate in the round. Before Yuan could pipe in, the satyr's grin made it clear he was curious what the man would declare without the Playmate's help. A small retinue of middle nobility had also followed suit, putting down pots that were clearly meant to participate in the game of Face that was taking place lest they look cheap or worse, weak in their respective empires.

Croupier's eyes lit up as the chips cascaded onto the table, where they bounced and rolled with wild abandon across the felt. They did not light up, however, as much as the faces of the greedy players. Dan had to fight them off to position and patrician the pot into neat little piles - the larger going to whoever won the next hand, the smaller a side-pot meant to be split among the runner-ups.
First came the Flop - Croupier discarded the top card and pulled the next three to spread out on the table in front of his position. With an artful flick, he flipped the cards over and fanned them with little flourish. Less was more in the art of dealing. No one cared if you put a spin on drawing the cards.
The Knight of Coin's question poked at Croupier like a spear. Not breaking the skin, but threatening nonetheless. So many heavy hitters and political adversaries had gathered around his innocent little table for a fun game of Poker, and it was now his job to be their entertainment. For the first time since coming to Vegas, all eyes were on the Croupier.
He knew if he spoke honest about the intention of the game, it would not look good for Yuan, Lotus or himself. Their whole scheme would die in its cradle if he gave up the ghost now.
Putting on his best disarming smile, Croupier answered, "Well sir, most of the money at this table is going to the one who wins it! As for what remains..."
Taking a quick glance around the table, Croupier continued, "That will go to recouping the costs of putting together this game you're all here to enjoy. As for my own part, I will be donating a generous portion of whatever part I make to support the war chests for our fight against the fae." He raised his voice and delivered a cheerful flourish, "So everyone remember to tip your Croupier generously, so he can help do his part!"

Before Yuan even had the time to formulate a coherent response, Buck was already grilling to newer members of the court. He stifled a giggle and kept a straight face as he watched Croupier come up with a reply.
He simply waited to see if he Golden Hind would address him at all, or if he would need to smooth things over. Keeping a weary eye on Chugunkin, the Beast moved closer to the table, ready to fire off the bets.

Never look to the Floor.
That was one of the first things you learned in dealing. The Floor was the nickname for your supervisor: the big guy in the fancy jacket who walked the floor between tables and made sure the games were run fair and honest. The guy you turned and called to whenever there was a problem. The guy you never wanted to see standing over your shoulder, because that meant he spotted a problem before you did.
Right now, Croupier had a feeling that Yuan was getting ready to stand over his shoulder something awful. The Knight had put Dan in an awkward position, and the Leechfinger felt he handled it well as could be expected - honest as possible, with a little philanthropic self-sacrifice thrown in for good measure. He didn't mention the rest of them throwing in too, but would they feel pressured? They wouldn't need to throw all their money - or even half of it. For a first-time game, Croupier was willing to save face by seeing his share go to "a good cause".
Instead, Croupier maintained his professional smile and kept dealing out the game.

"You let the Sun's Tongue know that," the former Searce said, offering Miller an out, and levelling a calm eye at Chasseur as the Runnerswift flexed. Buck offered Yuan a wink as he seamlessly shifted the conversation to catch up with those who had gathered at the table. The Magpie chuckled and shrugged with Buck's questions, where the table was about to skip over him, before putting down an opalescent and silver enameled egg ornament made in the style of overlapping flower petals. Chugunkin blinked, before cracking up at the offering and promptly landing a swat on the reedy Beast's back. Whether the Magpie had flinched or stumbled wasn't clear, but he seemed to be partaking in some in-joke with the Knight of Coin. The pale and gaunt beauty sighed and moved to match Buck's bet as Croupier answered, before their nose wrinkled and they held. The ephemeral quality to her mien reminded one of Sir Icarus, and the Onyx bard Lucas Chevalier. Chugunkin spoke Russian in the same jovial tone to the other Spring, sounding like a question, to which her response was snippy, prompting further laughter. When Hua Yuan heard the Magpie referred to as 'Ruben', his ears burned, with the name having been quietly dropped as the current main source of the Slaver rumors. He needed more time to gain more context on the lead, but for now there was fear and uncertainty around that particular Spring Narco. Buck titled his head, golden antlers glittering in the evening light, "I'm sure we'll promise match our donations to yours," he chuckled, tipping the drink and evoking the Wyrd itself to the other Springs.

Great. Just what Croupier needed. A contract. Another god-damned contract for him to worry about.
Even though it was an accident, once he was freed, Dan Miller thought he was done abiding by the rules and restrictions of the Arcane World. But no, instead in came reality with a nasty check saying that if he was to survive, Dan had to start abiding by certain rules. Certain contracts needed to be obtained, signed, obeyed and fulfilled. And in our bid for independence and survival, this whole damn community had become obsessed with more and more bindings and clauses. It may have given him power. It may have sustained him. But Croupier chafed at the idea.
Still, there was a decorum to observe. To reject the contract was obviously unhealthy for Croupier, both with his meager standing in Court and possible health. But accepting the contract outright would possibly threaten whatever trust Yuan had in him - if the Playmate had any left. Not even more than an hour into his first game, and Dan was already feeling like a dealer who wouldn't survive his first night in the pit.
But he survived many nights in the pit. The pit, the table was his hunting ground. And all these Knights and men and women of influence were at Croupier's favorite place.
With a smile, Dan replied, "That is an extremely generous offer. And I humbly and gratefully accept it."
