"Doesn't hurt." He assumed she had something reflective from the scene. "Roger usually handles the bigger complications with spirits."
He scratched at his nose as he mulled it over himself. "She's an oracle and anticipates a collapse. She's working to mitigate Doomsday, as it were, but she's competing with the old monarchy. She cheats fate with time and the Hedge, and has been doing this a lot longer than she lets on. Uriel doesn't demand that much in terms of explanation but she has a theory that Philicia manipulated the path of the civil war to get her the Crown."

"How do you mean? Like, she's older than she seems because she uses magic to extend her life?" She cocked her head to the side, a little confused. "So basically, we're helping an oracle forestall the death of our society, because... why, Solomon? What doom does she see?"
She took a deep puff of the cigarette.
"There's clearly a thing going on here that everyone's tiptoeing around. An elephant in the room that I can read through crinkles in the corners of eyes and tiny glances. I caught Alexandrite and he was outstanding." She gestured to him with the cigarette. "The Fae can't come in because of our 'poisoned glamour' and the Hobs call this the Valley of the Dead. We've got death gates and kids fucking around digging into them, desperate to find out the secrets, and everyone's acting like that isn't weird. Now Philicia is trying to forestall Doomsday, but our city's Wards are so damn strong we can hold back not one but two Fae titles."
Kai sighed.
"I know about two bloody True Fae coming and I've kept my mouth shut. You can be straight with me. What do we think is going to collapse? And why is Philicia having to compete to prevent Doomsday?"

"The former? Both. She's strong in the Wyrd, but there's ways to alter the passage of time with the Hedge," he explained, gesturing vaguely with the cigarette. The inquisitor blinked, hearing some of the frustration and fear creeping into a Wizened that had been surprised one too many times.
"The old monarchy cling to this place even in the echoes of dreams and the afterlife, where everyone's scurrying around in their imprint. They're going to die, or change, and it's going to cause everyone to turn in on themselves, so Uriel and Philicia are trying to take power from them." The topic was making him nervous, attention drifting to the growing shadows as if the Fall King could be listening.
"It's all supposedly cyclical and has happened before, where we're all stuck on a track that she can jump from point to point on the record. Or, you know, she's crazy." He took a deep drag.
"Her Keeper is an aspect of the Norns — a celestial wheel or a fate weaver. She's mentioned a- like a sort of purgatory she had to experience to tap that insight. It came at a cost. But she's not a Loyalist."
Solomon's expression darkened — he had checked. The Fairest was disturbed with whatever he had seen and was trying to articulate, but he had made his choice.

"So let me make sure I've this right. The kids in Spring and Summer are handling basic shit like murder investigations and ghost problems, and our nobility is locked in a power struggle with..." She trailed off, her perception twitching and her colors flashing. Her breath caught and she had a thousand-yard stare off into the horse run, her grasp on reality shaken for a moment. She took a long, deep breath, blinking it away as she kept it together. "A couple of very old, very dangerous creatures."
She started to pace a little bit, flicking the cigarette butt onto a rock and stomping it out.
"Well, fuck."
That kind of summarized it, didn't it? The new Avatars versus the old Gods, fighting for control over the future. A soldier and an oracle versus two god-like beings?
"And now we've got the Keepers on our doorstep, an Autumn Court that nobody trusts, and a Summer noble punting Spring rich kids over uprights like he's playing for the Superbowl because they fuck around with mind control for fun. All right. Now I know. We can manage this."
What other choice did they have?

"The Chevaliers are starting to bleed into Tolltaker territory, and worse, without contract with the Wyrd. It tells me that the Freehold is seeking its vengeance without formality or measure and the idea of mercenary justice is just irrelevant." The red pinpoints rolled in the void of his eyes, exhaling smoke. Their Court was ramping up in a way he hadn't seen since the Civil War, and his connection with Wrath made him all too aware of it.
"Rallying everyone under a common enemy that they can actively focus their energy on is a way to start. You mentioned that in the report."
The Fairest was quiet, burning through the second cigarette much faster than the first as the brand his Mantle hissed.
"I think we need to take a page from the Witch King and wield Fear as a weapon this time around to give civilians a sense of unity." It was callous, and blatant propaganda, but Solomon came from a time before it was a dirty word in times of war.

"As satisfying as watching him punt Archie like a ring-winning field goal was... Loki and his crew need some shit to work toward that isn't violence against our own. Warfare in the Dream uses similar skills." There was a hint of a dimple with the first part. It wasn't that Hartman was a bad person, but he was fucking around with some real cultural taboos. He'd learn. Loki had given him the path through this, and assuming he didn't fuck up and make it worse, this would all be forgotten within weeks. The reactions at Beltane had made her realize just how soft their Spring Court actually was. They needed to have a reason to put down their mimosas.
Two True Fae on the borders -- one infiltrating their damn dreams -- would do.
"I think it would be productive if Her Majesty were to turn the other Courts to the very real threat at hand and present a unified front. We can't just sit on this information. The Lantern isn't going to stop. If it's in our dreams, it's only a matter of time before it starts having a stronger foothold. Spring has a bunch of people who are steeped in the whimsy. With some training, they could do a lot to help. Autumn is the right group to provide that training." She shrugged. "What's Queen Uriel feeling on this?"

"She's amenable. I brought it up as an option. Our weakness is that our most charismatic member among the nobility is...Loki, I suppose." It was weird to think of him as the same rank now, given how long they had known each other. And the rise didn't come as a point of channeled control.
"All of us started as insular hunters and mercenaries part of the same band, and picked up our politics by osmosis and necessity. Uriel's the stereotype of the Reluctant Monarch, in the sense that she holds the position out of sheer devotion to the stability of our Freehold." He sighed, messaging a temple as he mulled why she was so stubborn about being direct in her position and beliefs.
"I don't know how to get her to get over her experience with the Iranian Revolution. But the- the public perception of her passivity with Spring's Monarch pulling the levers is messing with the Crown. It's like a calling that we're all ignoring. I'm not confident Loki will understand that it's just Summer messing with our heads to start a fire."

"Well, sir, you keep on appearing more reasonable than the baby Spring Courtiers, you're going to end up floating in the Court of Desire's good books and they'll do all the PR work for you," Kai had a chuckle on her lips. The idea of Solomon having the goodwill of the Verdant Crown was amusing, but the thing was, he had assets in place and his own people were making friends with Spring Courtiers. Why not?
"Sure. Loki may not get it, but his emotion is as raw and magical as any, which makes him a canary in a coal mine for what the rest of the Court is feeling. The hate needs to be directed. Freehold stability requires it. What happens if Uriel doesn't take a shot at something? Does that affect the Wards, or the Wyrd?"
It was some nerd shit, but it seemed important.

The Knight's brow pinched, before nodding. It was a weird concept, she was allowed to be flashing her obvious humour on the idea of Spring finding the inquisitor palatable.
"It means the Season might call for a change in leadership, Rose." He growled, expression ugly as shadows emphasized the disgust with the idea. "And though we're all the same rank with experience in leadership, I don't like what kind of cowboy nonsense comes from that sudden transition. We need more than just a university student touting modern theories of justice to keep everyone's opinions checked and on the rails."

A Monarch change? Well, that wasn't going to be something that would go well. It would derail everything at play.
"All right." She gestured to Solomon with the last bit of the cigarette. "Sign me up. I've done enough to be a fine rep, I'm connected and have enough of a reputation to have credibility with the other Courts. Plus, it doesn't hurt that I can actually lead a squad in a military situation and come out with my crew alive."
Cinder was a good kid and a fine diplomat, but she wasn't a soldier. There was a need for war-time diplomacy here and now. Summer needed to have a face that you could see and trust on a battlefield as well as a bar. She flicked the butt and stomped it out.
"You do your part and encourage Her Majesty forward, and I'll cover your back. Maybe even bring you some new allies in the process."
She flashed him a grin.
"Speaking of allies... Chasseur owes me a favor and his Season has me in its regard. I'm going to get him to teach me how to read what people want... on the sly. Might be helpful in what we're trying to accomplish, especially when nobody suspects it."

Solomon blinked.
Sign me up...?
"Like a Squire's Oath?" He seemed more dumbfounded that she was floating direct service, that the comment on Spring's gifts almost flew right past him. But he was a detail oriented by nature, and actually laughed. The sound was dry and cracked, like he wasn't used to vocalizing humour or joy.
"You got the Sunset Prince. The Sunset Prince, to teach you outside their rules of engagement regarding supernatural emotional manipulation?"

"You say it like you've never had a Squire before."
The sudden cutback to the Spring piece led to her shooting him a wink.
"Not yet... but he owes me his life times twice, and I've kept his secret difficulties with Winter in Los Angeles quiet, and Spring's tossed a blessing or two my way, and nobody has to know. Nobody's going to question him. Just you wait."

Radio silence answered the first statement, even if it was made in jest. Even without Kai's empathy it was easy to determine that the Knight was uncomfortable, doubly so when he was well aware it wasn't professional to be flustered like this. He flip flopped between examining the dying filter between his fingers as he tried to gather his thoughts to trying the basics in encouraging his vassal that she had performed exceptionally, looking lost at what to say. A surface read would have just told her he was agitated rather than not knowing what to do with the sudden rush of positives.
"Good work."

Kai grinned and popped off a salute. It was good enough for now. No need to press further; he probably had a lot to think about right now.
"I'm pretty sure Hoof Hearted is rested enough if you want to keep going."
They were here to do work, after all.
