The count blaring in the background wasn't Kai's immediate concern. Her eyes were tracking the ice, the shake of Lancelot's arm as she realized just how important the ice was in keeping this 'trench' together. "He's right. We've got to outrange it, and quick. She-Wolf, we'll follow your Spin. We'll dig --"
Shit.
Holding her hands to her ears, Kai grit her teeth and watched the wall, watched Lancelot and thought about exactly how little time they had to move. He couldn't keep this up forever. They had to go. They had to go the second it was over. And when the shelling was done, she gave a hand signal and barked, "MOVE WITH SHE-WOLF! EIGHTY SECONDS, THEN DIG IN AGAIN! GO, GO, GO!"
Up and over the top she went, sprinting as fast as she could through the sludge and marsh. One. Two. Three. Four...

Kai leapt into action, laying out her plan as she left the trench. He shut his eyes and clasped his ears as the world shook around him. Dani was still shaken, despite all of their encouragement, no one seemed to have a clear idea of what to do. He wanted to leave them all behind, all these people that were slowing him down. His blood was screaming at him to escape, in the seconds between the shells.
Instead, he backed up against the side of the trench and braced himself. "Dani, go. Follow Kai. I'll give you a boost." He squatted and placed his hands to form a step. "I'll catch up." She would do it for him, probably. She would do it for anyone; this stupid, impulsive, clingy, beautiful force of freedom. She would do it, but she couldn't. So he would do it instead.

She-Wolf's answer was met with a sharp nod before the Ogre's palms were slapped back over their ears. As soon as the shelling was done and Kai leapt, Linden followed; no time to think, just act. Hauling themself up out of the trench, they gritted their teeth and silently cursed the added weight of the chainmail. They didn't regret putting it on, it might still save their life, but it wasn't doing them any favors right now. As they ran they did what they could to assist with the hedgespinning, less skilled but managing.

"Wha-I-i, I can-" She looks around, things are shifting so fast. Fuck. We need to move.
And then Rowan stays behind to push her forward, "Wait-Rowan-" Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. "You better catch up or I will be so mad at you." That might be the most steady her voice has sounded in the last minute.
She covers her ears, eardrums feeling like they could explode, but so far, she can still hear. Run. Go. NOW. And she's able to follow Kai, leaping forward to get with the rest of the group to build the next trench. But she's not focused, her mind tugging back to Rowan not being immediately with her. What if he gets killed? What if-what if?
"Shit. Kai, do you still want me to start a fire? Would it help?" She's still feeling shaky and not quite sure of herself. But no, if they needed the thing, she could do the thing.

Finn braces, hands on his ears against the next impact. As it passes he glances to Fire ringer and Rowan, seeing the odd Darkling boosting his fellow Summer out of the trench. That was an unexpected sight. Finn isn't really sure if Rowan believes he really can catch up or if he's playing the hero. Still, it would be plain farce to go over and toss the small man out. So Finn plants a hand on the top of the trench wall and vaults out onto the field, running and spinning before his feet even hit the ground.

Lancelot blinked, eyes watering a bit as pain lightnings through his damaged ears and bile gurgles into his mouth from the vertigo. He vaguely registers Kai gesturing in the ringing silence, but can't ignore his motley member ripping his hand from the weaving ice as the Runnerswift vaulted over the top along with Kai and Linden. And with that, the damn broke. Firebringer's short form was boosted with Rowan's surprising strength as she shouted at him, but placed no resistance as she ran. There was no time to say goodbye or chatter. Finn climbed with the advantage of height to get out before the landslide sucked him down. He roared at the Elemental to stop fucking around when he knew what the consequences were for her delay. The She-Wolf heaved, body splitting into an amalgamation An Idea, the walls of ice splitting and flooding with the absence of Winter, grabbing the drowning Oracle in her maw as the landslide blistered free and dumped into the pit, attempting to brace Rowan against the tide but unfortunately it was coming from all angles, not making a difference. Benjamin was tossed over the top like a ragdoll. Lancelot exploded with his motley member's shared speed under their own oath, stumbling before Buck relentlessly dragged him like he weighed the same as a feather. The gold streak charged past Kai, the pair working as one to split the mud a second time; Buck hammering a pit while Lancelot attempted to feed the deep roots of the outskirts of the forest to buttress the tide of the viscous terrain. Kai's influence stabilized it better with the slipshod foundation, expanding the size and willing more cypress to weave a thick wall as Firebringer stumbled into the growing trench; saying something that wasn't heard in all the frenzied panting and running. The Polychromatic and Sunset Prince barked intent back and forth to synchronize the spinning, Linden synching up as they raised the stone and roots below for a foundation that wouldn't have them sinking in mud. As Finn lands heavily, the foundation raises fully with him, sending the mud below the wooden walkway. Ben mostly falls into the trench, completely covered in mud as he coughs and spins an arching cover of the trench; not so big as to trap the others outside, but angled as such to prevent exploding debris from falling inside. Once he realizes the She-Wolf isn't there with him, the whites of his eyes are stark against the dark of the shelter. Neither was Rowan.

Sliding into the trench, Kai took stock. There were mere seconds into their much improved defensive structure, a place where they could have a second to see if they were in range or out and a place where they could hold for a round of shelling if needed before they moved again. It wasn't going to take everything Lancelot had to keep this one stable.
Buck. Lancelot. Ben. Finn. Linden. Dani. Two missing. Shit.
This wasn't a moment for someone to be a hero. She was fairly sure anyone who went back out there before the next barrage was dead. Rowan and She-Wolf had a hole in the ground, even if it was full of water. It wasn't good, but it could have been worse. She put her hand firmly on Firebringer's shoulder, using one shoulder to cover an ear while plugging the other with her off-hand as she hunkered against the wall.
"They'll make it. Head down. Cover your ears."

In a blink, Rowan was slammed by the torrent of icy rock and sludge; punching into his chest as he braced on instinct. He plugged his nose with the roof on his tongue as he bent into a fetal position, preventing the air from being punched from lungs and triggering the instinct to gasp. He could tell he was spinning, vertigo throwing his point of reference off as pebbles and twigs and something slimy grates against his skin, the force of nine feet of mud piling on top of him.
Rattling in the cyclone, he kicked off something solid, weathering the seconds as old knowledge whispered that the shelling was coming. Swimming felt like digging, trying to part the viscous crush of wriggling rats, reeds and branches, groping in a void until his hands clawed at fur. Without even thinking, the Darkling scurried up the wall of the monster like a rat himself, heaving the final push as gravity tried to prevent him from breaching the surface. His nose was almost flattened from all the mud that caked his features, spitting as gasping as he tipped forward and crawled on all fours to pick up speed in shallow waters, praying he wouldn't hit a drop-off like Danica had while the Wyrd was called upon. Bones and tissue crackled and twisted as the skin became encased in black ice, body dissolving in a shadow cocoon as the Darkling exploded forth with animalistic speed.
A mass of roaring mouths and gnashing teeth rose behind him, mud flying as the Ogre casually stepped from the dwarfed trench. Hair and meat rapidly aged and rotted, sloughing off from the jogging skeleton of the massive Wolf as the corpse burst into ash and fiery leaves on the wind.
A red light pulsed, throwing the swamp into darkness and crimson silhouette.
An explosion tosses him weightlessly into the air, the bright wind of Fall screeched among the torrential rain of death and shrapnel as the Knight of Lores flooded into the trench...
Followed by Rowan somersaulting into the bed of leaves.

There he was. A bed of leaves, a Darkling thought lost; Kai flashed Rowan a grin as she kept covering her ears and waiting for the bombs to stop falling. Once there was quiet again, there was no time to waste. They had a way, and it was working.
"WE GOT THIS! EIGHTY SECONDS, THEN DIG. GO, GO, GO!"
One. Two. Three --
Kai leapt for the trench, pulling herself up and out of the trench as she broke into a sprint. As she went, she stumbled... and almost fell into the muck that would threaten to claim her. However, there was no way she was going down. Digging at an inner reserve, she tossed herself further, her hands reaching out to spring off of a rock. It was an awkward forward handspring, but it was enough to keep her forward momentum going without falling.
As she reached the end of her count, she spread her arms wide and tossed her magic out, digging in once more, even more efficiently than last time now that she could squarely imagine what they were trying to accomplish.

The Oracle managed a sound somewhere between a sob and hysterical laughter before the barrage hit. Molten lead and shrapnel trickled in, fall in front as they pinned themselves against the far wall under the shelter. Buck grit his jaw, hands moving as Lancelot held his wrist and shook his head; no time to heal, and risk the Runnerswift being deafened himself. The Chatelaine's shimmering silver had dulled in some facsimile of paleness, some vomit escaping from the severity of the nausea of vertigo from a damaged inner ear. Nevertheless, as Kai hauled ass, Buck launched at the same time, dragging his friend with him like a stumbling doll. Benjamin exhaled, grey-scale form dissolving himself into the same torrent of wind and Fall.
Golden leaves followed, reality folding the Hedge as the tree line rushed towards them in a pinch; the Autumn Knight twisting the world to drive them towards their target.
Earth split, a new trench forming with the Polychromatic's charge.
Trees exploded behind, chunks of wood flying in deadly, flaming spears cutting and bleeding into the edge of the forest. There was no time to see who made it, the She-Wolf's wild hunt folding reality again as the group skipped the concept of distance.
The leaves settled and dulled, halting the blur of Thorns inches from a massive effigy. Dried corpses were piked around the base, skulls littering the bed as the strange alter. The Knight of Lores emerged from the dead bed of plant matter, gasping as she caught her breath. The Oracle picked a twig from his mud-caked hair, hand shaking as he looked back towards the thick fog. Time was strange, the light of an early morning casting the landscape in a dull grey. He muttered something about being on the lookout for an omen.
They were nowhere near a Trod, deep in the wild of the Hedge.
So who made it?

Linden barely processed the disappearance and return of Rowan and She-Wolf, the spike of adrenaline lost into a single harder heartbeat in the chaos of everything else. And it was time to go again, limbs tearing through the sodden trench and onward; there was no if they could make it to the tree line in their mind, just a sense of drive and purpose. Running through a swamp indefinitely was torture, but having a visible, achievable goal put power back in their legs
On the other side of the Hedge compression, they dug in their heels and half-stumbled to a halt, getting ready to book it away from the effigy too if necessary.

No rest for the wicked. Rowan had barely had the time to catch his breath and it was already go time.
His legs shot him out of the trench and into action. Bounding on all fours, the Darkling looked more and more like an animal with every Contract evoked to survive. His lighter load and Wyrd-given speed carried him across the murky marsh, squeezing through as the Knight of Lores compressed the space around him. His pulse thundered along with the artillery, along with the absolute certainty that if he stopped, he would die.
