"Perhaps," Riley said with a light shrug, but a smile non the less. "I'd agree journey is often the fun part."
The journey was often the only part the Darkling had found fun. Nothing seemed to stick, they'd blame it on their Durance if it wasn't for their track record before. Too many jump to play the love card when talking the slightest crush or attraction. It's not that Riley had a problem with love, in fact, quite the opposite. The constant thought any attraction was romantic love, watered it down to the point of being saccharine trite, at least in the bewitches opinion.
The Moth made an exaggerated but playful roll of their eyes as Ivory mentioned a future check-in.
"My sister would be over the moon, hearing you right now. But all the same. Thanks. I tend to be a day late and a dollar short when it comes to my own accountability"
The Darkling waved their hand as if trying to brush the topic in general aside.
"Enough about me. What about you? What's new, at least what's good in your life right now?"

Ivory smiled to the Moth.
"I am glad you let me in," she offered, "Thank you."
Ivory suspected that affording others some view of vulnerability likely caused Riley some distress. What they were doing wasn't always easy and Ivory recognized that. She was thrilled at the trust.
A small laugh chirped from the Fairest's throat as she afforded the Darkling a wink.
"Your sister sounds like a wise woman. Perhaps one day we will be able to form some acquaintance," Ivory said. Much of this depended on Riley. Ivory understood the desire to keep those close to oneself separate from court affairs, "And you can blame Anthony... or perhaps Penny."
The final words were said in a softer light as the Pale Dragon stared elsewhere, the small smile upon her lips a signal for her recall of pleasant memories, even if her visage was tinged with grief.
"If we had meant shortly after my return my... view on many things would have been different," she admitted, "The responsibility as a guardian to another life has a way of tempering one's view on things, even if it should happen quite unexpectedly."
At the question the dragon merely shrugged.
"Not much, if I'm honest," she said, "With some new tangible goals, I have some things I would like to do, but I have yet to act on them."

The Bewitched blinked a few times as Ivory thanked them for their openness. They hadn't expected that. A soft smile rose. "Uh sure. Thanks for listening...and your advice"
Riley chuckled slightly at the mention of Claire being a wise woman. They were protective of their sister, and meeting other lost would take time. Claire would probably do anything to see this world, Riley feared what they would do to keep it from her. "I am sure she would like that. She's the better of us" Riley took note of the mention of Anthony and penny. Anthony Riley had heard about only in passing, that and the Late Pendragon. Penny however was new, and important.
The moth's brows furrowed slightly noticing the Dragons grief at the mention of Penny.
"That's more than understandable given your circumstances. I don't know if Anthony realizes it, but he is quite lucky to have you as a guardian."
Not much seemed far-fetched to Riley. They could only imagine the life the pale dragon lived, fantastical to be sure, probably not true, but they made for amusing stories in the Moth's head.
"Goals are good, they keep us driven. Have something to strive towards, to hope for. Should you ever need help, you have my number, you know that right? " The Moth reminded the pale dragon. Not that Riley could imagine Ivory needed help with much, but the darkling did have some skills.
"If you don't mind me asking, how old is Anthony?"

Ivory smiled at Riley's gratitude, granting the Darkling a nod as they moved along.
"Yet I wonder if she says the same," Ivory retorted as Riley espoused their belief that Clare was their better.
There was a gentle chuckle at Riley's compliment.
"Compared to his father? I..." she began, pausing as she considered her words, "I will be adequate. I lack Penny's foresight and experience, but I know enough."
Clearly, compared to their late partner, the Dragon did not feel she was the superior guardian.
"I will have to find my own way with ensuring his protection. And I am, in a fashion," Ivory expanded, "but it's not enough to me for others to merely know I am watching over him. I need them to understand what they stand to lose if something happens."
If someone harmed her charge...
I will burn this city to the ground.
"But that will come in time, for the moment I need to deal with my own crossroads," she admits, "Even if I know the path I am going to take."
At the question of her son, Ivory pondered a moment before answering.
"Anthony is nineteen, Riley," she said, "He is a freshman at UNLV and, for the sake of honesty, he is dating one of us."

Unlikely. The moth silent thought regarding Ivory's suggestion that Claire would say something similar. The best? Unlikely. The fun one? Maybe. A headache? Certainly.
The suggested threat, behind Ivory's words, was not missed. It was powerful. Ivory's misgivings about her abilities, suggested to the darkling that she held herself to a impossible standard. Relatable.
Riley opened their mouth to say something and paused for a moment uncertain how familiar they could be in this conversation. " Maybe that's true. But I am sure your late husband would be happy to know you're there for Anthony. "
Hearing the age of Anthony, Riley raised an eyebrow. "That's...a difficult age," They say with a light chuckle. Thinking how much of a pain they were at that age, and all the things they were going through.
"There's...a lot going on. That and being off at University. " They grimaced. Riley was not a guardian or parent. Few in their circles were.
"I imagine that on your mind a lot. Even more so given his current choice in partner."
It was always possible A mortal with a lost could work. But it was complicated at the best of times.

Ivory offered a small smile as Riley reiterated Pendragon's faith in her. The Moth was right without truly knowing. There was a reason Anthony was entrusted to her care without a nanny.
"Thank you," she offered, "That is very kind."
The mention of the difficulty of teenagers earned a chuckle.
"It can be, but our close age make the relationship more... casual. He knows I don't have all the answers, but... he's patient. Mostly," she said, "He isn't on campus any more. He goes there for classes, but lives at home again. After my little incident, he wouldn't take no for an answer."
There was a pause as Ivory considered what to relay next.
"He assumed it had happened at a party. Naturally, I couldn't tell him the truth," she said, "Part of him blames Evelyn I think... but that's neither here nor there. In either case, it revealed some glaring flaws in how we deal with one another. They will be dealt with in time and I expect it will foster some understanding."
There was a brief gesture of a hand as the Pale Dragon dismisses the concern over Anthony's choice in partner.
"If all goes according to plan, it shouldn't matter," Ivory offered.

At a party, yep that's sounds just about right.
Riley couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the mildly vague but laden with heavy implication way Ivory danced around the topic. It was understandable however. "Sounds like you got that handled. I hope that it goes well. My- " Riley paused thinking about their parents. "My parents struggled with setting healthy expectations with my ideas of relationships. Granted I was a shit. But- that's a weird place I reckon. It sounds like you have a plan."
The Moth lingered on the thought of Anthony with a Lost partner. True bonds were such a complicated issue for the lost. Riley had spent many nights contemplating them. "As a whole, we as a group do have challenges with good communication. Sometimes it feels like we all are speaking different languages. An unfortunate truth to be sure. I haven't decided yet whether we are better off finding romantic attachments among ourselves or among mortals. What are your thoughts on that?"

So it was that the cordial smile returned as the pair skirted along difficult topics.
"I will manage... And adapt, as necessary," she offered as the Darkling espoused that they seemed to have things under control.
The mention of parents causes an almost acidic chuckle to sound from the Fairest's chuckle, her gilded gaze shifting elsewhere as she recalls some bitter memory.
"Parents can be... imperfect. I only hope that their flaws were at least forthright," she offered, "I'd describe mine as a mirage. A strong facade that remains until the right moment causes it to break... Although in my case it was only one of them that wore such a veil."
As the statement progressed, the Pale Dragon's words dripped with hate. However, the look softened as the conversation turned to love, the Fairest latching on to the topic as she cleared her throat and relaxed.
"The nature of our existence requires some caution," she offered as the Moth spoke of the obstacles to communication, "To put it simply: Whether one of us or our less-altered compatriots, it doesn't matter. Certainly, I encourage you to be honest at a point should you possess a... plain lover. It is better for them to understand things and will make your life substantially easier when you can keep fewer secrets. The issue becomes one of security should your bond diminish, but it would take a particularly jilted lover to try and expose the truth, I think. What's more is few would believe them, unless certain groups seem to be listening. In which case, they are signing their fate beyond your control."
It was a simple truth. Ex-lovers that played stupid games got stupid prizes. Namely death if they attempted to become a breach and proved too effective as a threat. That did not mean Ivory was flippant with whom she exposed herself to, the only mortal in her immediate circle that knew what she was was Evelyn, and she was a unique case. However, sometimes it helped to know that exes that attempted to expose things would be facing a amount of support against such acts in the Freehold... although many a careless Lost could end up in the same crosshairs if it was determined that they were not cautious enough in their choice of partners.
"One of us would be easier in many respects, Riley," she said, "but that doesn't mean you shouldn't listen if your heart is pulling you to another. Just bear in mind there will need to be certain... concessions."

Riley could relate to the seething hate towards parental units. It felt affirming for a moment, or maybe just vindicating. The moth tried very little to think about their parents, even Claire knew to avoid that topic too often.
"Mine were rather forthright in their disappointment in my existence and their low expectations " They shrug at the thought.
Riley couldn't do the parenting thing, and the fact Ivory was taking it on with such Poise was another impressive feat the Dragon had done in getting their life together. Riley listened to Ivory's thoughts on the matter of relationships between lost or mortals and let out an amused laugh.
"I don't mean, me per se. I have dated on both sides of the fence" they pause and can't help but give a devilish grin at their accidental double entendre
"To use your words. I have found those less altered, come with a sort of freedom. While with them I am no more than the mask I wear. And for a minute, I can pretend. Nothing happened. But in time that freedom comes at the cost of isolation doesn't it? The lack of understanding. I guess that's where the honesty you mentioned comes in, doesn't it? But that comes at its own cost. I wonder if that cost, in the end, is too much"
They let that thought linger for a moment, their eyes go unfocused and distant. They had never shared this part of themself with a lover, or even just those untouched by the fae. It felt like a burden they couldn't bear, that Riley couldn't bear. But they wondered about Claire, it felt cruel to withhold and even crueler to tell. Their eyes refocused to here and now.
"But on the other side. Those like us. You can be known, seen for what you are. A shared understanding and experience. But it can be like mixing oil and water can it not? "
The bewitched ran their finger across the lip of their drink glass in small circles.
"In the end I reckon it comes down to what you're willing to sacrifice doesn't it? "

Ivory nodded at the mention of Riley's contempt for her parents. Even if part of her doubted Riley had suffered the same betrayal, it was good to know that Riley at least understood the hatred. Even so, Ivory was all too eager to abandon that portion of the discussion, welcoming Riley's thoughts on relationships as a means of distraction.
However, when they spoke of freedom, Ivory looked impressed.
"I envy you. I cannot pretend in the same manner, if I'm honest," she said, "My other side is too interwoven in my nature, I'm afraid. I will never be the young girl I once was, but... that is for the best, given the new lives we lead. She would not have survived."
It may have been blunt and to the point, but sometimes that could be needed. Even should she lie and socialize heavily among mortals, the reality remained that Ivory's spirit was honest with itself. Ivory was not a shapeshifter nor did she heavily experiment with her sense of self. Ivory was what she was and it was, at once, beautiful and terrifying as the situation demanded.
"The concept of cost, though, is dependent on your interpretation and ability more than anything, I think," she pondered, "There are ways to secure one's partners."
As the Moth began to ponder some inherent problems with the pairings between to Lost, Ivory looked almost confused, but then that had not been her experience. At the question the Pale Dragon merely shrugged.
"I cannot empathize, I'm afraid. The chief relationship I've had with one of us was my late husband," she explained, "He... tempered the flame. Without him, I do not believe you and I would be speaking. When a fire burns too hot it seldom lasts long."
In other words? I'd be dead.
"Perhaps our relationship wasn't typical," she admitted, "but we were complementary more often than not. We endured. As for the others? We were quite discerning. Welcoming someone new into a family is best done with an abundance of caution."

"Your sense of self is admirable," Riley said with a nod. The Moth wished they could feel so grounded like that. But how could they, when they knew they were but a fraction of what they should be.
"I don't feel it to be pretending, however. Sometimes I find their ignorance to be reliving. It just allows me to focus or see parts of my world from another viewpoint" One not shaped by them. "It doesn't last." How could it? They ended the thought.
"Secure?" The Bright one raised an eyebrow at the word. "How do you mean?"
Riley listened to Ivory express a brief glimpse of what her relationship with Pendragon had once been like. It was bittersweet to hear the dragon speak of it. Maybe it was the fact the dragon had been lucky to find him, or perhaps Ivory was better at relationships. The moth couldn't help but feel a small sting of jealousy.
"Sounds like it was pretty special" The Moth tone was somber. Losing him must have been unbearable.
"I don't think many of us are so lucky in our relationships" maybe even for normal people.

There was a shrug.
"It evolves as it must," Ivory said, "I know only what I can never be again, what I will become remains a mystery, but I know it to be far different to who I was Before."
The thought on ignorance and dealing with mundanes is met with a somber nod. The truth reigned the moment the Lost looked in a mirror. They had become something... else.
"Bargains, favors, and the like," Ivory answered as the Darkling pondered over security, "Not to mention more mundane things. On this side, many threats can be deterred by presence of mundane security. Locks lock, fences remain tall, and bullets still hurt. And that's to say nothing for the... communal safety here. There is a reason I chose to come to Las Vegas... I recognize not all boast the capabilities I do with my resources, but the fact remains things can be done to offer security to those we choose to show the truth."
A sad smile lay upon the Pale Dragon's lips as Riley spoke of Pendragon.
"He was," she offered, "There are still times I wake and look to his side of the bed half-expecting him to be there, but he is gone. It's been about 2 1/2 years, but the heart still yearns. Perhaps, when the end comes, we will see each other again, but for now I must live. He would want that."

As the dragon described, the way they 'secured' those they loved and trusted, caused the hair on the back of Riley's neck to rise. It sounded protective, overly so. But it also felt like clipping a bird's wings, telling them it's for their good. Could love and trust live in such a place? It felt off to the moth. Yet would they be any different in their own pursuit for security?
"Ah," they said slowly at description. " I see. That's a very different lived experience," Riley offered. Was she so protective because of the loss of her husband? The Darkling wondered.
" I reckon, I'm lucky I don't have to protect anyone like that."
The entertainer watched the sad smile and listened to the weary words of loss from the dragon. It was tragic, to have lost so much. Riley gave a soft smile.
"I am sorry." was the only thing that came to their mind. What more could they say.
"To living than" They raised their glass in a toast to the dragon across from them.

Ivory looked to the Moth.
"The changes They force affect more than ourselves. It is an unfortunate truth," she offered, "but a truth nonetheless. Changes need to be instituted for all in some respects, but... they need to be willing. Hence, my hesitance with exposing the truth to my son."
At the comment, Ivory smiled.
"But you do," she offered, "How you handle Claire in your life is up to you, but I encourage some security. Some... assurances that she won't be bothered. If rivals learned of her..."
Ivory's voice trailed off, her expression turning almost regretful at the insinuation.
"That was not meant as a threat," she said before clearing her throat and falling to silence.
At the apology, Ivory granted a light chuckle, hoping to inject in some levity.
"Unless you are secretly a fault Cessna, you have nothing to apologize for," she offered, "His loss was sudden. And hard. What is done is done and I have allowed myself ample time to grieve."
Ivory raised an empty glass to the toast with a laugh.
"It seems another cocktail is in order."
