Ivory looked at the image, lips part as a light laugh tried to leave her throat at her Serena's expression. It came out as a weak croak and Ivory's fingers found herself touching her neck as she relexively wined at the pain.
After a moment, the smile returned, granting Anthony a reassuring look. She would be fine.
She's beautiful, the Pale Dragon wrote.
Then came an expression of understanding as he spoke of their recent troubles.
Relationships aren't always simple, Ivory offered via the written text on the iPad, There were times when your father and I were almost at each other's throats. It wasn't all passion. We had to learn to grow with each other. I'm sure the two of you will be fine. Have you spoken since you got here?
She's welcome at the house if you ever want to take her. You're a man now, I'm not going to say you can't have guests if you decide to come home.
There was a natural decline in the conversation, but, there was still one thing she needed to ask. An heirloom had been sent to NYC and she needed to ensure it had reached it's recipient.
Did you get my gift?

Anthony drew the pocket watch out of his plaid-shirt lapel, looking a little guilty that the heirloom was in such a precarious place. But, he didn't want it with his luggage and emergency scramble with Ivory's potential death. He thumbed the worn metal, "Yeah I don't know what to say, honestly. It means a lot, the quote actually helped too. I wasn't super stoked leaving you by yourself for the holiday, if that makes sense. Having this made it feel like it was okay, like, there was something to come back to," he was pensive for a moment, lacking Ivory's gilded way with words.
"And it wasn't going to disappear if I shook it up a bit," he laughed.
"Did you get the concert tickets?"
He preferred buying experiences.

An expression of relief spread across the Pale Dragon's features as the watch was retrieved, but passed no judgement on Anthony's carrying the heirloom in his pocket. It was now his, after all, and Ivory felt confident that he would treasure it. As a happy tear rolled down Ivory's cheek, her expression softened.
I think your father would have liked knowing you kept it close to your heart, Ivory wrote, hoping to reassure Anthony of his decision. It was the right one.
We had hoped to give it to you when we felt you were ready to step into the world, I think he'd agree moving to the dorms would have been a good sign.
He would have been so proud of you.
The Pale Dragon let the moment settle before she continued, tapping away at the iPad yet again.
I don't think it was easy on either of us, honey, she wrote, referring to the holidays alone, but you are getting older. I knew you'd want to try it out eventually and I'm not upset. I'm glad you're experimenting with new things. I did too. I went to a Christmas Party with new friends, not the usual crowd. And Evelyn and I had a nice dinner at the Capital. I missed you, but I was not alone and that made it easier.
Ivory would not speak of her current predicament simply because, to her, it was unrelated. This hadn't happened on a holiday and, frankly, had nothing to do with her mental state. She was trying to protect the Freehold and made a mistake. However, the nature of her near-sacrifice was beyond Anthony's needs to understand for the moment. She had agreed to tell him, but that would be easier when they were home - after he learned what she is.
Before then, she had a few people she needed to talk to, but that could wait. Her son was here and Ivory was pleased to have this time with him, despite the circumstances.
I did, thank you. I've already cleared my calendar to make sure I can go.
And I'm glad you know I'm not going anywhere, Anthony. That means more than you know, she offered.
Another pause as she looked to her boy, her smile warm. There were only a few more obstacles to clear before he could know the truth. Whether that was for better or worse, Ivory didn't know, but it seemed the right thing to do. He deserved an explanation as to why this all happened.
Have they already scheduled the eval? she asked before remembering, I suppose not. I just woke up and I assume they want me to rest a few days beforehand?

"Oh my God, that's cheesy," Anthony chuckled, covering his face as it reddened. Once the moment past he caught up on her typing, making pleasant small talk with how she spent Christmas.
On the topic of Evelyn he remained neutral, saying it was nice that they weren't by themselves and the venue sounded nice alongside the gift exchange. His smiled softly as his eyes ran over the line about Ivory feeling validated.
The evaluation would come when she was ready for it. "Maybe some sleep?" he gestured to both of them, knowing that hooking his own needs would incentivize her.

Ivory would beam as Anthony reddened, the gesture showing his understanding of Ivory's pride in him more than his words could ever convey.
Plus their was a hint of pride. How many mothers could say they made their children blush without even saying a word? Saying, of course, being the operative name. His statement on the words' cheesiness made Ivory want to laugh, but she knew she could not.
I think we could both use it, she wrote, agreeing with Anthony's assessment as she smiled sweetly, Your room is just as you left it. Go sleep. When you wake though, make time for Serena. I'm not going anywhere, but I'm sure she'd like to see you now that you're home.
Her smiled turned soft as she turned the tablet towards her boy, both acknowledging his relationship and letting him know she expected he make time for his new love as well. That's how relationships worked after all.
Then, after he had time read, Ivory scrolled down to her final message.
I love you.

A touching moment is exchanged, and Ivory is later subjected to the psychiatric evaluation once she has had her rest.
Questions on her late husband was the obvious focus, though the truth was enough: the Pale Dragon took a designer drug and didn't know what she was doing. Her motive and activity wasn't of import, just if she had a plan and a motivation for the incident. She didn't even have to go to any uncomfortable places like her childhood trauma.
Evelyn had checked in, and a plan was made about bed rest and private care without a fuss...
